Description

The Arctic survival course is our premier cold weather survival training program and if you take this course you will be immersed into full time cold weather survival environment. This course is designed to teach students what it takes to survive in temps down as low as -50 degree temps, with modern gear and primitive bushcraft skills. During the training, you will traverse over a variety of a terrain and get to witness some of the most magical landscapes on the planet. The Aurora Borealis is common occurrence in this part of the world and the beauty of this place cannot be matched by very many places in the world, but despite the beauty of the land it is extremely dangerous if you don't have the right training. You will travel with modern skis, improvised snowshoes, and will learn how to traverse this terrain with safety and efficiency.

The course will be run by one of the most well known arctic survival instructors in the world. Toby Cowern has been living and training in arctic environments for over 20 years and arguably has more survival experience in this survival specialty than almost anyone else in the world. Having worked for Lofty Wiseman (SAS survival guide author) as his arctic survival instructor for years, Toby has had the privilege to train with the best in some of the toughest environments on the planet. He also live and trains with the Sami people of Sweden quite regularly and they are the masters of that environment having survived there for millenia. During this course we will have the opportunity to visit and train with the Sami people and on the last day we will have a graduation party with them to celebrate the trip. This course will also be accompanied by several of our featured SIGMA 3 instructor cadre as well. For more info please click here to read about the Lead Arctic Survival Instructor Toby Cowern

Training Emphasis

This course will have a wide variety of skill sets, but our primary training objective is to teach you advanced bushcraft and travel tactics for cold weather. The survival priorities are always the same no matter where you find yourself in the world. Shelter, water, fire, food, tools, navigation, and medical skills. Your core temperature regulation is the single most important thing in these training temps, so we will show you a multitude of different ways to stay warm. Shelter, water, and fire always go together and you really need all 3 in order to survive in the arctic survival conditions. Sometimes the order of the 3 might change slightly during different arctic survival scenarios, but you must have all 3 skills mastered at a bare minimum in order to survive short term.

We will focus heavily on the mastery of fire making in this austere environment because great fire making skills can sometimes be more important than shelter and water. In these temps, creating micro-climates in order to warm yourself back up is the single most important skill to have. Once we have mastered these skills we will work to perfect our ability to travel and procure food from the land so that we can sustain ourselves for the long term. In Sweden, the best meat source is fish and we will teach you a plethora of different tactics for ice fishing and making sure that you have those calories to sustain you. Although we will be procuring some game from the land, SIGMA 3 will be providing meals for the course so that the emphasis is on learning and not just surviving. We want you to walk away with skills and not just learn to embrace the suck the whole time.

Instructor Certification Program

The arctic survival course is an add on component to our survival instructor program and will get you closer to achieving either your Level 2 or 3 survival instructor certification. Though you do not need to take our Level 1 Survival Instructor course in order to attend this arctic survival training, you should have some basic outdoor skills at the very minimum. Upon graduation of the arctic survival course you will receive a certificate of graduation and depending on your current certifications, it may increase your teaching qualifications within the SIGMA 3 Survival Instructor program. This arctic survival course adds another environment for instructors to perfect their skills, because we believe you can't be a totally comprehensive outdoors survival instructor unless you have experience in varying survival environments.
