Event Details

Open House is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet your fellow classmates, faculty, and staff. We hope you will be able to join us. PLEASE RSVP BY April 10. Only admitted students and their guests are allowed to attend Open House. Students replying after the deadline will not be able to bring a guest. Here is a tentative agenda subject to change:

 

Friday Schedule

1:00–4:00 p.m. Registration: J-School Lobby

1:00–4:00 p.m. University Financial Aid: 202 Kent Hall Financial planning officers will be available to discuss your graduate school financing options on a walk-in basis.

1:30–3:30 p.m. Journalism School Tours: J-School Lobby Sign up for a building tour led by current J-School students.

2:00 p.m. Campus Tour: Low Library Columbia has a beautiful campus in the heart of the city. The Visitors Center in Low Library will offer a free, guided tour. Meet in J-School lobby at 1:45. Approx. 1 hr. Limit 40 people.

2:00–3:00 p.m. J-School Financial Aid Overview:* Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Tarin Almanzar, Associate Director of Admission and Financial Aid, and Eric Halperin, University Financial Aid Officer, explain the scholarship and federal financial aid processes. *This session will be repeated Saturday.

2:00–5:00 p.m. Ph.D. Work in Progress Presentations: Room 601B Listen to the current Communications Ph.D. students discuss their dissertation research projects. Ph.D. admits only.

3:00 p.m. Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism Student Gathering: Room 604 Admitted investigative journalism students meet Director Sheila Coronel.

4:00-4:45 p.m. Welcome and Opening Remarks: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Nicholas Lemann, Dean and Steve Coll, Incoming Dean

4:45–5:45 p.m. Curriculum Breakouts M.A. students: World Room, 3rd Floor, M.S. students: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Faculty in each of our master’s degree programs discuss the curriculum, followed by a Q & A.

5:45–6:45 p.m. The Student Experience M.A. students: Stabile Student Center, 2nd Floor, M.S. students (full-time): Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor, M.S. students (part-time): Room 601B Current students share their experiences in the M.A. and M.S. full- and part-time programs, followed by a Q & A.

6:45–8:30 p.m. New Student Reception: Havana Central (2911 Broadway, between 113th and 114th Streets) Meet students, faculty and staff in a casual setting and enjoy food and drink.

9:00 p.m. After the reception, join members of Columbia’s student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) at the Amsterdam Café, 1207 Amsterdam Avenue (between 119th and 120th Streets).

8:00–9:00 a.m. Registration for New Arrivals: J-School Lobby, Continental Breakfast: Stabile Student Center 

9:00–9:30 a.m. Welcome: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor David Gonzalez, New York Times, J’83 

9:30–9:45 a.m. Student Services Overview: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Melanie Huff, Associate Dean of Students

9:45–10:30 a.m. Student Showcase: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Current students showcase their class projects to give you an idea of the types of work our students produce. 

10:30–10:45 a.m. Career Services Overview: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Gina Boubion, Associate Director for Career Services, provides insight and answers your questions about journalism careers after J-School. She’ll offer suggestions for preparing for your studies and your future in journalism. 

10:45–11:30 a.m. Alumni Showcase: Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Recent alums return to speak about their past J-School experiences and current careers as journalists. Tracy Jarrett J’12, Andrew Seaman J’11, Angel Canales J’09 

11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Lunch: Stabile Student Center and Lobby, Student Information Fair: World Room, 3rd Floor, Journalism School Tours: J-School Lobby

 

12:30–1:15 p.m. J-School Financial Aid Overview:* Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Tarin Almanzar, Associate Director of Admission and Financial Aid, and Eric Halperin, University Financial Aid Officer, explain the scholarship and federal financial aid processes. *Repeated session.

 

1:30–3:00 p.m. Meet the Faculty and Admission Staff Faculty and staff will hold office hours to meet with students (see flyer in your bag for rooms and details). Admission and financial aid staff will be available to meet with students in Room 203. 

2:15–3:00 p.m. J-School Financial Aid Overview:* Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor Tarin Almanzar, Associate Director of Admission and Financial Aid, and Eric Halperin, University Financial Aid Officer, explain the scholarship and federal financial aid processes. *Repeated session.
