The MGCBNA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit association and a chartered member of the National Black Nurse Association, Inc (NBNA). The organization was founded in July 2008 by Dr. Romeatrius Moss. The goal of the MGCBNA is to eliminate health disparities and strengthen communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The organization’s purpose is to organize local African American nurses and become the leader of health education, health promotion, disease prevention, and empowerment of underserved population. The MGCBNA mission is to meet the needs of the community through collaborations with other health care and community organizations to improve the health status of individuals. Numerous health disparities plague Mississippi. Mississippi is among the states that leads the nation in obesity and poverty. Mississippi also has a high teen pregnancy rate and high school dropout rate. Mississippi also has a high incidence of Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Strokes, Cancers, Sexual Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome HIV/AIDs.
