Event Details

The African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation (AIRF) has invited Dr. Rose Ihedigbo-Franklin, mother of NFL player James Ihedigbo, to its annual Mama Kamau Benefit Breakfast to discuss her new book, Sandals in the Snow: A true story of One African family's Journey to Achieving the American Dream.  The event will be held Saturday July 20th, 2013, 9 a.m., at Bete Ethopian Cuisine and Cafe, 811 Roeder Rd., Silver Spring, MD 20910.

Statistics show that Black Africans are among the fastest growing immigrant population in America, and while over eighty percent of the children born to African parents are born in the U.S., many local social service agencies lack the cultural knowledge, sensitivity and skills required to effectively address the immediate needs and issues of these youth. AIRF's Catching Up Program (CUP) was created to address these critical challenges.  Funds raised at the Mama Kamau Benefit Breakfast, named after the AIRF founder Dr. Wanjiru Kamau, will help support the CUP youth and all CUP activities, including after-school and club programs, an arts and cultural enrichment program called Youth ArtBeat, mentoring and tutoring programs, a talent show and awards ceremony, and an annual leadership and education conference.

Sandals in the Snow will be available at the event for $21.00 for a paperback copy and $32.00 for a hardcover copy.  This fascinating memoir recounts the amazing journey of an African family searching for the American dream.  Dr. Ihedigbo-Franklin draws readers into the account beginning in two small villages in Nigeria, through snowstorms, and into life in New York and Massachusetts. This engaging story sweeps the readers in, allowing them to live vicariously through the experiences. Sandals in the Snow integrates the author’s native language, Igbo, with English and utilizes African phrases and simple translations as she poetically describes her story and the faithfulness of God that was impressed on her through every experience. She invites readers to discover hope for their own struggle in this dramatic testimony to what can be achieved through commitment, faith, and education. Readers will be encouraged at this portrait of human resilience and triumph over adversities.
