Anne of Green Gables: Experiential Literature Workshop - May 30
Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM (PDT)
Santa Cruz, CA
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (L.M. Montgomery)
We can’t wait to bring this book to life! We'll explore the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feel of this wonderful story through prop-based discussion and creative activities, including drama, art, writing, history, geography, science, and more! (A fast, fun way to see just what we do is to watch our 3-minute video.) When children learn with their senses, their enthusiasm and curiosity increase, and teachable moments abound.
Anne Shirley is not the boy that elderly siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are expecting to arrive from the orphanage. There’s been a mistake; they needed a boy to help out at Green Gables, their farm on Prince Edward Island in Canada, and the girl must be sent back. But it’s not long before the talkative, imaginative, and endearing Anne finds a permanent place in their home and in their hearts.
Anne is a bright, eager-to-please, cheerful child, though she’s unhappy about her bright red hair and her simple little name. Her imagination rescues her from those curses and gets her into all sorts of situations, often to the dismay of disciplinarian Marilla, who finds her a handful. The shy Matthew, however, sees only goodness in her. Anne and he are, as she says, “kindred spirits.”
This engaging story centers around Anne’s developing relationship with her two benefactors, the Avonlea residents, her adventures and mishaps with her “bosom friend” Diana Barry, her rivalry with her classmate, Gilbert Blythe, and her growing sense of self. Anne sets high goals and proves her worth – but as she progresses, she alters her goals to suit more noble purposes. In the end, she learns that doing the right thing feels even better than imagining a more exciting course.
How it works: Each four-hour LitWits workshop focuses on a single work of literature that the children have read before they arrive. Heavily abridged and audio versions are perfectly acceptable! Though we encourage completion of the book before the workshop, it’s not necessary in order to enjoy our creative, immersive activities.
Ages: We don’t have age restrictions – as a parent, you know best what your child is ready for, interested in, and capable of. Having said that, we find that ages 9-12 are almost always "ready to LitWit"!
Time and Place: Workshops are held Thursday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the campus of Vintage Faith Church at 350 Mission Street, Santa Cruz, upstairs in the Children & Youth Building. The Abbey coffeehouse is right next door, if you’d like to jumpstart your four hours of free time!
Cost for each 4-hour workshop: The cost of each workshop includes all supplies and snacks; children bring their own lunch. If you are registering one child, each workshop is $65. If you are registering siblings for the same workshop, each workshop is $60/child. (LitWits Workshops is an approved vendor for Ocean Grove Charter School, but this class is held after the school year ends on May 15, so it's not eligible for Ocean Grove payment.) If one of your referred friends attends a future session, we’ll send you a gift certificate for a free workshop!
Cancellation policy: We purchase materials several days in advance of each workshop, so please let us know as soon as possible if your child won’t be able to attend. We appreciate your consideration!
Making great books a memorable, hands-on experience for kids!
LitWits makes literature an experience kids won’t forget -- which leads to incidental, natural learning. For four hours we immerse them in the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feel of a single pre-read book through prop-based discussion and creative activities, including drama, art, writing, history, geography, science, and more!
When children learn with their senses, their enthusiasm and curiosity increase, and teachable moments abound. LitWits has been seizing those moments since 2010.
In order to purchase these tickets in installments, you'll need an Eventbrite account. Log in or sign up for a free account to continue.
