Renowned pianist and teacher Nadia Boulanger, said "To study music, we must learn the rules. To create music, we must break them." Alaska Public Media invites you to do both at  Anchorage Music Co-ops’s first Live Music Workshop. July 16 & 17th at the Elmo Sacket Broadcasting Center, 3 master musicians from Chicago will deliver the workshops; Improvisation through Premeditation, Vocalizing Vulnerability, and The Fabric of Rhythm. (See more details below)

Music lovers and performers of all levels are welcome!

Class Descriptions:
Doug Bistrow presents: Improvisation Through Premeditation
A deck of cards holds an almost infinite number of possibilities, and yet a card game without rules is no fun. In this session, we will look at ways to impose rules on oneself during the act of improvisation. This gives us a freedom to navigate chords and grooves which we may not have had if every option were on the table.

Shane Jonas presents: Vocalizing Vulnerability
No other musical instrument is can match intimacy and uniqueness of the human voice. What is it about a singer that can stir and captivate an audience? In this course you will learn how to utilize the emotional connection between your vocal chords and the audience.

John Barbush presents: The Fabric Of Rhythm
Rhythm gives music style it’s identity. Yet, if you listen closely, you will hear rhythmic phrases that are shared among all styles of music from a multitude of traditions. Discover the rhythms that are present in all forms of popular music and explore the slight variations that make each style distinctive.

Alaska Public media is hosting a free concert after the workshops both nights!
