This session will examine the role of foster parents and group home care providers in protecting the rights of children in out-of-home care. The concept of advocacy will be introduced and participants will review strategies to advocate for children in vulnerable circumstances as well as supporting children in out-of-home care to advocate for themselves. Participants will review widely accepted rights of children and youth, including survival, development, protection, and participation. Participants will identify practices which can be integrated in their current foster or group home setting.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
(a) Identify a range of advocacy strategies for children in out-of-home care
(b) Describe skills related to advocacy for children in out-of-home care
(c) Apply strategies to support the process of self-advocacy for children in out-of-home care

About the Presenters
Aurrora De Monte is a faculty member in the advanced diploma program in Child and Youth Work at Fleming College in Ontario, Canada. Heather Sago is coordinator of the program and has a degree in criminology from the University of Manitoba. Both are career child and youth care professionals and are founding leaders of the Child and Youth Care Advocacy Project.
