Event Details

Just Food is proud to partner with Whole Foods Market for this series of cooking demonstrations and tastings.

It’s hard enough to satisfy every diner at a popular Manhattan restaurant—imagine having to do it without using meat, fish, dairy, or eggs! Candle 79 (and sister restaurant Candle Cafe) has been doing just that for years, offering inspired vegan creations that have earned the praise of restaurant critics, hardcore vegans, or folks who just love excellent, plant-based cuisine. Tonight, let owner Joy Pierson show you how it’s done. Carnivores welcome!

On the Menu: Heirloom Tomato-Avocado Tartare; Farmers’ Market Gazpacho; Black Bean-Chipotle Burgers.

Instructor: Joy Pierson, Co-Owner, Candle Cafe and Candle 79; Co-Author, The Candle Cafe Cookbook (Clarkson Potter)

Just Food is a non-profit organization that empowers and supports community-led efforts to increase access to locally grown food, especially in underserved New York City neighborhoods. Just Food provides training and education to community members to help them launch projects like farmers' markets and CSAs, provide education in basic culinary and urban agriculture skills for their neighbors, and advocate to make their corner of New York City a healthier place to live and eat.

Since 1995, Just Food has pioneered sustainable food models, including CSAs, community-run farmers’ markets, and farm-to-food pantry programs. Just Food trains and builds lasting partnerships with community leaders and community based organizations to develop projects, such as CSAs, farmers markets, and other models, that create alternative ways to bring farm-fresh, locally grown food to their neighbors.
