On Saturday, June 21, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Eastern States Office, Lower Potomac Field Station and the Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors will co-host a recreation adventure for active and retired military personnel and their families.
The America’s Heroes and America’s Public Lands – Military Families and Veterans Event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA), located on Virginia’s Mason Neck Peninsula. The festivities will take place at the Mustang Trail (10702 Harley Road, Lorton, VA).
Pre-event festivities will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a guided bird hike led by the Audubon Society. The event will officially kick off at 9 a.m., and will be chock full of activities for the entire family, including archery, fishing (all equipment and bait supplied), a climbing wall, kid’s games, a reptile show, mountain biking led by REI and MORE (bike and helmet not supplied), pony rides, and therapeutic horse riding demonstrations. A Wild Horse and Burro adoption will also take place adjacent to the recreational activities.
The Lion’s Club will sell hot dogs and hamburgers at a nominal cost. There is ample parking and restrooms, as well as shade under tents where a variety of exhibitors will share information about other recreation sites on the Mason Neck (including the Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge, Mason Neck State Park, Gunston Hall, and the Northern Virginia Pohick Bay Regional Park).
A brief ceremony will commemorate the signing of a veterans' outdoors Memorandum of Understanding between the BLM and the Sierra Club, followed by remarks from the leadership of the organizations. The joint venture is designed to spearhead similar events out West engaging active and retired service members in recreational activities.
