Experts from around the world agree that sea level is rising at an alarming rate. What does this mean to California, and specifically San Francisco Bay Area? Join leading experts for a conversation about sea level projections, what’s at stake for Bay Area communities, and how we will cope with rising bay and ocean waters.

Panel of Speakers:

  • Peter Gleick  (President and Co-Founder of the Pacific Institute) will describe the conclusions of the groundbreaking report, The Impacts of Sea-Level Rise on the California Coast, that concludes that sea-level rise will inevitably change the character of the California coast and we must finds ways to adapt to that change. 
  • Michael McCormick (Local and Regional Affairs Policy Advisory at the Governor's Office of Planning and Research) will give an overview of how the State is working with regional and local partners to address the impacts of climate change on communities throughout the state.
  • Larry Goldzband (Executive Director, San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission [BCDC]) will describe the efforts of BCDC to address the impacts of sea level rise in San Francisco Bay and surrounding communities.
  • Marc Holmes (Bay Restoration Program Director, The Bay Institute) will discuss the results of The Bay Institute's recent study about using restored San Francisco Bay marshes as the centerpiece of a regional sea level rise adaptation strategy.

About the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project: 

The 34th America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project is Global “Call to Action” Campaign that embraces the connection between sailing and the ocean.  Our overall goal of the Healthy Ocean Project is to create awareness around the problems that face the ocean and inspire individual action around the solutions that exist.  The project focuses on three core issues: Marine Protected Areas, sustainable seafood, and marine debris/plastics.

America's Cup Local Healthy Ocean Project partners are: Aquarium of the Bay, Gulf of the Farallon National Marine Sanctuaries, Mission Blue, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Save the Bay, Marine Mammal Center, and Thank You Ocean.  

America's Cup Global Healthy Ocean Project Partners are: IUCN, OceanElders, MissionBlue, One World One Ocean, Aquarium of the Bay, Sailors for the Sea, and Conservation International.
