Event Details

The first day of school should be a day of hope, a day when we look forward to our children reaching new heights.

But this year is different….

  • A bare bones budget means closed libraries, no full time nurses, large classes, reduced instruction in art and music, and few extracurricular activities.
  • Reduced support services means schools are likely to be less safe.
  • 40 schools next year and 64 over the next three years are slated to be closed, most of them neighborhood schools serving predominantly low income, African American or Latino communities. Your school may be on that list.
  • Education in Philadelphia public schools continues to be about test scores instead of the needs of children.

The unelected School Reform Commission has turned to high priced corporate consultants and the city’s business elites to develop its five year plan based on budget austerity and turning over schools to private interests, turning a deaf ear to widespread protest from the community. There needs to be a better way. This September a coalition of labor and community groups will take the first steps to develop a plan that reflects the needs and views of parents, students, educators and neighborhood stakeholders. To make your voice count be there.
