Make Friends With an Alpaca:

Students work with an alpaca “one on one” to guide him through obstacle and agility exercises.  To accomplish their task, a relationship of trust is required between the alpaca, student and volunteers. We believe this helps to encourage social development

The focus of the Alpaca Companions program is social development. Students work with an alpaca “one on one” to guide him through obstacle and agility exercises.  To accomplish their task, a relationship of trust is required between the alpaca, student and volunteers.

Is it Therapy?

No, our program is not a type of therapy.  It’s an opportunity. Our students are encouraged to choose their own alpaca “buddy” and activities.  We do not require outcomes and goals. This is a time for students to relax and have fun.  The best part is that improvements in social skills happen naturally.

Who We Serve:

We serve individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) who are12 years and older, there is no age limit and we encourage adults to participate.

Class Format:

Classes are held in Adrian, MO.  Each class runs a maximum of 2 hours.

What Happens During Class?

Class size is limited to 5 students and 5 volunteers. It begins with a group “meet and greet” inside the barn with our herd of 11 alpacas and Josh, the llama.  Then, students and volunteers are matched with an alpaca “buddy” to work with one on one.  The alpacas and their companions are led outside where they work together to practice activities such as loading in a trailer, walking through tunnels and even following each other in an alpaca parade.  Students are encouraged to focus on getting to know their alpaca and can participate as much or as little as they wish.

Annual Exhibition:

Each year we host our “Party with the Pacas” fall exhibition.  This is an opportunity for the alpacas and their companions to “strut their stuff” and share what they can do with family and friends.

Getting Started: New students are encouraged to schedule a free private tour before registering for a class.  Registration is required for each class through our website.

Fees and Donations: There is a $10 fee for each class.  Additional donations are always welcome and accepted
