Event Details

After last year's SOLD OUT screening of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, we're bringing the Alloy Orchestra back to Memphis for something a little more obscure to help get everyone ready for the 16th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival.

This show is made possible thanks to the generous support of Dorothy Kirsch.

He Who Gets Slapped From the collection of George Eastman House

The latest score by the famed Alloy Orchestra, which premiered at this year's Telluride Film Festival, accompanies a little-known but sensational silent melodrama made in Hollywood by the great Swedish director Victor Sjöstrom (The Wind, The Phantom Chariot). Lon Chaney, the "Man of a Thousand Faces," plays a brilliant scientist who loses both his groundbreaking research and his wife to a dishonest man. Wounded, he joins the circus and becomes a sad clown who wears his heart on his sleeve and suffers repeated humiliation and abuse — to the delight of hundreds of spectators. This piercing, Pagliacci-style fable, shown in a restored version from the George Eastman House, may have inspired Sternberg's The Blue Angel and Bergman's The Naked Night/Sawdust and Tinsel. With Norma Shearer and John Gilbert.

Working with an outrageous assemblage of peculiar objects, Alloy Orchestra thrash and grind soulful music from unlikely sources. Performing at prestigious film festivals and cultural centers in the U.S. and abroad (Telluride Film Festival, The Louvre, Lincoln Center, The Academy of Motion Pictures, the National Gallery of Art, and others), Alloy has helped revive some of the great masterpieces of the silent era.
