to honor

ALICE SMITH

As President of the North Country Garden Club of Long Island (NCGC), I am honored to receive the “Advocate for Historical Preservation and Education Award” from the Oyster Bay Historical Society.

Truly it is the Garden Club which should be commended in their centennial year for its commitment to the preservation of our Long Island history and heritage.  Examples of the club’s purpose to stimulate community interest by improving and beautifying buildings and their surroundings are in its upkeep of the Earle Wightman house garden, its work on the Raynham Hall kitchen garden and the entrance fountain at the Theodore Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary.

Fortunately the Oyster Bay Historical Society is the permanent home of the miniature North Room at Sagamore Hill which was created in 1975 by members of NCGC. The Club won top prize at the Garden Club of America Bi-Centennial annual meeting in 1976 for this masterpiece.

In 34 years as a member of NCGC, it has been a pleasure to serve as the chairman of various committees, and to have been twice Vice President and twice the President.

I am merely a steward of the club’s purpose to promote knowledge and appreciation of gardening through the encouragement of conservation of natural resources as well as the support of education in the fields of gardening, horticulture, conservation and natural sciences in the community.

On behalf of NCGC and myself, I thank you.

Alice G. Smith, President of the North Country Garden Club
