Alex Guthrie w/ Drew Davis at Red Light Café
Folk Rock, Blues or Americana?
Alex Guthrie’s sound spans the lot of them with his soulful voice and lyric guitar playing. Singer / songwriter Drew Davis opens, returning to grace the RLC stage once again.

Alex Guthrie at Red Light CaféAlex Guthrie may only be 20 years old, but when his honey-rich voice bathes you with his life-earned lyrics, you’ll say what everyone does … “he’s an old soul.” Like a fine whiskey that starts rough and raw, but mellows to smooth, complex flavors, his voice builds from his toes - pure feeling - then rumbles through his chest, tempered by heart and emotion. The tone is clear and strong, but with grit and guts too – a great mahogany board polished smooth as glass, but still the grain is strong, swirling and proud. Each layer of growth representing both the beauty and strength that makes it special.

Listening to his grab-you-by-the-shirt-and-pull-you-in-tight voice, you could almost fail to notice Alex’s chops on the guitar … almost. Before Alex reached deep down in his soul and found his voice, he was guitarist. He still pops up, from time to time, with some of the region’s top acts to sub-in on lead guitar. Thoughtlessly, as though the guitar is a part of his body, Alex encourages the guitar to sing. Whether it is the crying wail of slide guitar, speaking in call-and-response to Alex’s words or his fingers dancing across the neck in soul-filled solo, his guitar never fails to impress.

With influences including Otis Redding, Van Morrison, Marc Broussard, and Ray LaMontagne, Alex’s genre goes by different names to different people. Folk-Rock, Blues, or Americana; the listener’s preference is likely to influence his or her categorization. What they all agree on, though, is that it’s great music … or as Alex sometimes says with a broad, sideways grin, Great Folk’in Music.

Drew Davis at Red Light CaféDrew Davis has been performing live since she was 11-years-old and began writing music when she was 6-years-old. Now, at just 23, Drew has developed her talents to become an incredible singer and songwriter. Throughout her career, fans have compared her talent to that of a young Grace Potter, Patty Griffin, Fiona Apple and Brandi Carlile. The combination of her heartfelt original compositions and soulful power vocals has the ability to make any room instantly silent.  An Austin venue owner says, “I see so many musicians walk through my door and perform. Few have that undefinable quality that makes people stop and stare. Drew has it. She has that ‘it’ that so many people strive for.”

At the early age of 14, Drew was the youngest musician ever to play at National Women’s Music Festival. She released her first full-length album when she was only 11-years-old (released in 2001), and now has two albums out on iTunes and other online mediums. Her first, Traffic, was released at the end of 2008. Her newest album, Old, Old Heart, was released in November of 2012. Both albums contain 10 original songs and were funded and produced by Minneapolis sound-tracking company “inthegroovemusic.” Drew is currently working on her third album, set to be released at the beginning of 2014.
