About this event

Join AJC as we honor Senator Cheryl C. Kagan with the 2021 Hyman Bookbinder Award. The award is presented to exemplary leaders who demonstrate the energy and spirit of Hyman Bookbinder, AJC’s long time Washington representative. “Bookie” was respected for being thoughtful, tenacious, and compassionate, the quintessential relationship builder, connecting with everyone from presidents to activists.

Senator Kagan has served with distinction on the AJC Washington Regional Board for more than 20 years. Please join us on April 25th to honor her for her commitment to the Jewish people and to making the world a better place.

Senator Kagan (D-District 17) represents Rockville and Gaithersburg in the Maryland General Assembly. She’s a former member of the House of Delegates and has worked in the nonprofit sector. In the community, Kagan is a founding and active member of Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac, MD. Numerous organizations recognize Kagan as an esteemed colleague, community leader, and politician with awards such as Maryland’s Top 100 Women (3x), the Daily Record’s Circle of Excellence, Maryland Municipal League “Municipal Super Star” (x5), Maryland Association of Counties “Legislator of the Year,” National 9-1-1 Institute “Leader of the Year,” and Conflict Resolution Center of Montgomery County “Peacemaker of the Year.” Kagan has an unwavering dedication to local government priorities, community values, and allyship.

Previous Hyman Bookbinder Awardees include William Kreisberg (2019), Thomas Kahn (2018) and David J. Farber (2016).

AJC Washington connects our community with AJC’s global advocacy work to enhance the well-being of the Jewish people and Israel. Our access to diplomats, elected officials, and interfaith leaders advances AJC’s broader global priorities: combating antisemitism, promoting Israel’s place in the world, and countering the spread of radicalism and extremism.
