‘Ethics and Risks When Running to Goal’

Sally Boucher, CFRE

Director of Research, WealthEngine

In our noble and honorable profession of philanthropy, you are responsible for the funds needed to support and enhance the mission of your organization. Are the methods and measures used to reach your goal in line with professional ethics or do you find behavior that could be described as a risk to the organization and the mission it proclaims? As the compliance officers for our organizations, it is more important than ever that we not only understand the importance of ethics and integrity in our day to day work lives, but have a framework through which we can untangle situations and decisions. A framework for deciphering ethical dilemmas ensures we make decisions consistent with our and our organizations values, grounded in unbiased analysis.

In this passionate and ‘no holds barred’ keynote address, discover what lies at the core of our behaviors, how to examine yourself and the behavior around you, in addition to understanding the best practices for leadership and decision making.

Planned Giving for Charities 101:  Should We Call a Lawyer?

Presenters: Christine Woodcock Dettor, Esq., and Emilee K. Lawson Hatch, Bousquet Holstein PLLC

We will address the question charitable organizations ask themselves time and time again – do we need to call our lawyer?  There are some “red flags” to recognize when negotiating gifts to charities with some donors. What should development professionals be aware of when planning for and receiving charitable gifts and bequests?  We will discuss the importance of managing the expectations of donors and compliance with the law when accepting gifts and bequests.  We will also solve the mystery for charities when legal notices are received in trust and estate proceedings.

Homegrown/Organic Predictive Modeling

Presenter: David Robertson, Syracuse University

How would you like to be able to turn on (literally) a predictive modeling and forecasting tool hidden deep within the recesses of Microsoft Excel? This session examines the basic analytical functions and formula already available to you in Microsoft Excel that drives all predictive and forecasting models, allowing you to objectively see the specific characteristics of your ‘direct mail donor’ ‘annual gift donor’ and ‘major gift donor.’ By understanding these characteristics of ‘those who give,’ you will be able to create predictive modeling for those individuals that are your best prospects. You will come to understand that predictive modeling is NOT rocket science and walk away armed with the tools to begin predictive modeling Tuesday morning, guaranteed!

Finding, Keeping, and Engaging Board Members: A Chair’s perspective

Presenters: Deborah E. Moore, past chair of Make a Wish Foundation and Paul Ross, founder of the original Ronald McDonald House

Have you ever wondered what motivates your board to open their rolodex and help expand your networks, engage fellow board members and solicit financial support? Local board chairs discuss their thoughts on a Board’s role in fundraising, advocacy, and peer-to-peer leadership. This session will offer great take-homes for organization staff and board members alike.

Fundraising is a Team Sport

Presenter: Cassandra George Ramos, Principal, Wind and Water Consulting

In fundraising, we’re not talking about beating an opponent. But what would happen if we could put together a team in which members set goals, made decisions, communicated, managed conflict, and solved problems in a supportive, trusting atmosphere in order to accomplish their objectives? Join us for a spirited discussion, some pointed questions and, hopefully, some fresh ideas.  Feel free to wear your team colors!
