Afghan Women's Writing Project + Forte Poesy: Night of Poetry and Song
Sunday, May 18, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM (PDT)
Join us as 25 young women ages 10-19 from the greater LA area share songs they have written as a part of a monumental cross-cultural songwriting project.
At the beginning of 2014, students chose to take on an especially ambitious project intent upon shedding a light on the human rights issues and unspeakable resilience of the Afghan women. Each Forte Poesy writer chose a poem written by an AWWP poet and adapted that poem to song based upon what it meant to her or how it made her feel. Students have been hard at work perfecting their compositions so as to honor the bravery and ingenuity of their co-writers in Afghanistan.
The Night of Poetry and Song will be the crown jewel in this project as students will perform these songs which speak of vivid vulnerability, unshakeable hopes, and dreams of a better future. It has been staggering to watch the progress and creation of these works- it will be life-changing to witness the culmination. Our goal is to provide the opportunity to write for as many human beings as possible through the money raised by this fundraiser.
