Adventures in the Estuary Summer Camp
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
San Francisco, California

The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve or GTM Research Reserve, a living laboratory and coastal recreation area, is offering a summer camp for science and exploration minded kids!
Adventures on the Estuary Camp is a fun and educational way for your child to discover the importance of the coastal community, learn more about the adaptations of animals that call northeast Florida home, explore the many habitats found at the GTM Research Reserve and even participate in research projects just like the biologists who work here! All the learning sessions will be balanced with good-old camp games and crafts that support the learning themes! This year we're switching it up a little.
We're dividing our age groups into separate months. June is for 7-10 year olds and July is for 10-12 year olds. Each week will focus on a specific habitat that comprises the estuarine ecosystem.
Update!! We have opened up our last week of summer camp to 7-12 year olds. We also have changed the theme to incorporate some of the best lessons from each of our three camps (Beach, Estuary, and Uplands).
Week 1 is Beach Week
Be prepared for some good ol’ summer beach days. Every day campers will visit the GTM Research Reserve beach and ocean habitats. While at the beach we’ll pull seine nets, explore the dunes, and examine the microscopic world in order to unravel the complexities that create our dynamic coastal systems. Campers will have an opportunity to take a ride on boat in the Intracoastal Waterway to the St. Augustine inlet with Jax Water Tours during which we’ll use hands-on research equipment to look at biodiversity and examine environmental parameters. Campers will also learn how our coastal systems are being effected by climate change and some civic-minded solutions that can be incorporated at home or at school.
Week Two is Estuary Week
The science behind the estuary is relatively new compared to other ecosystems around the globe. There still so much we don’t know which provides the perfect opportunity for our campers to help us explore and discover. Campers will be pulling seine nets, looking at plankton, and exploring the saltmarsh in order to learn just how rich our estuaries are. 7-10 year old campers will practice their engineering and boat building skills while 10-12 year olds will take a kayak trip with Ripple Effects Eco Tours. Similar to the other weeks campers will learn how our estuarine systems are being effected by climate change and some civic-minded solutions that can be incorporated at home or at school.
Week Three is Uplands Week
During this week we will investigate the diverse habitats that make up the Guana Peninsula and discover how what happens on land can affect the water around us. Freshwater marsh exploration, fire dependency investigations, and upland tours will combine to help campers see the interconnectedness of nature. Campers will also learn how our uplands systems are being effected by climate change and some civic-minded solutions that can be incorporated at home or at school.
All camps are drop-off at 9:00 a.m. and pick-up at 3:00 p.m. Monday - Friday
