Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Instructor Initial Course


Description and Target Audience: This American Heart Association (AHA) workshop is designed to prepare current ACLS Providers to become ACLS Instructors.  ACLS instructors are required to have an in-depth knowledge of and experience base in all 10 of the ACLS core cases as well as the ability to effectively deliver and discuss this knowledge. This course is appropriate for physicians, nurses, EMS and other current ACLS providers.


Steps to becoming a ACLS Instructor after registration is complete

1.    You will receive a pre-course program called the “Instructor Core Course”  (CD/Online format) in the mail 2 weeks prior to the date of this course. You will be expected to complete this before entry into the live course. You will not be permitted to enter the live course if you have not completed the pre-course program.

2.    You will attend the live course of your choice.

3.    You will make an appointment to be monitored at your first course within 90 days after the ACLS Instructor course. Arrangements will be made at the live course. Please do not schedule courses until after you have attended your instructor course. 


Pre-requisites – All 3 must be completed before entry into the course

1.    Copy of your current AHA “BLS for Healthcare Provider” card and  ACLS Provider Card” (front & back)

2.    Letter of recommendation (from supervisor, another instructor, or someone who has knowledge of your teaching ability)

3.    Please contact the Education Center prior to registration to affiliate with the CoxHealth Training Center. You must be pre-approved.



At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

·         Discuss how to utilize ACLS course lesson maps.

·         Evaluate another student running a megacode while correctly using the skills testing checklist.

·         Discuss team concepts.

·         Discuss how to successfully remediate a student.

·         Demonstrate the teamleader role in a megacode according to the skills testing checklist.

·         Describe how to facilitate discussion of the 10 ACLS core cases.

Testing: Written exam (50 questions) which must be passed with an 84%. One-on-one skills testing required.


Course Length:  5-6 hour web based program, 8 hour live class program, and course monitoring at your first course. 


Certification Length: 2 years


Location: CoxHealth Education Center, CoxHealth North, K400, 4th Floor, Classroom #1.

Directions: Enter Cox North from the Robberson Ave. Northwest Entrance. Upon entering the building turn right and take the elevator to the 4th floor. You will arrive in the Education Center lobby.

Educational Credit

CoxHealth is accredited by the Missouri State Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CoxHealth designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


CoxHealth Education Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Missouri Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 


1.5Contact Hours


CoxHealth – Prehospital Services is an approved provider of continuing education by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Unit of EMS.  This activity has been approved for 6.5 contact hours.  The Training Center number is 07710C.

Participants will receive statements of credit at the end of the program when all requirements for credit have been met.  Satisfactory completion of objectives will occur through course attendance.  Therefore contact hours will be given only for hours the participant attends.  In order to receive a statement of credit, all participants must sign-in at the registration desk, turn in a completed evaluation form at the end of the program, pass a written test, and demonstrate the skills necessary to complete this course.


Includes: AHA Core Instructor Course, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Instructor Manual, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider Manual, AHA Program Administration Manual and certification card. Fee also includes a $150.00 Training Center Membership fee. This fee covers instructor support for 2 years and required course monitoring visit.
