Event Details

Join WQED Multimedia as we pre-screen a portion of the new documentary, Freedom Riders, before it airs on WQED-TV!

Freedom Riders is the powerful, harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism.

Screening will begin at 6:30 p.m., with a discussion and Q & A with original Freedom Rider, Joan C. Browning, immediately following.

In addition to answering questions from the audience, Joan will be talking about her experiences of being incarcerated as a Freedom Rider at only 19 years old, and will share letters and notes she wrote during her time in both Albany and Georgia jails.

This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
