  • Provide comparison of 1991 Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) and 2010 ADA Standards (ADAS).
  • Provide comparison of 2010 ADAS to 2010 California Building Code (CBC) if different.
  • Understand applicability of Title II to publicly-funded facilities.
  • Understand the difference between Title III requirements and Title II requirements.
  • Understand the intent of most ADA & CBC requirements.
  • Recognize and identify common errors by Design Professionals and Contractors.
  • Understand Best Practices for how to avoid common Design and Construction errors.
  • Understand the consequences of committing an accessible design error.


  • Paul L. Bishop, Architect, CASp has 38 years of experience in the architectural profession. His practice transcends several areas of specialization, including traditional design services, code consulting and historic preservation. Mr. Bishop has significant experience in the area of accessibility consulting and has provided accessibility consulting services for numerous architects, engineers, developers and contractors on difficult design problems. For 10 years Mr. Bishop provided accessibility document review services for the California Division of the State Architect, Access Compliance Department for K-12, community college and State University system projects and State of California owned and leased buildings. He has provided expert witness services for hundreds of accessibility-related lawsuits, for both plaintiffs and defendants. These cases have involved the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Fair Housing Act, California Building Code and the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards (UFAS). Mr. Bishop is certified by the Division of the State Architect as a Certified Access Specialist (No. 044) and the International Codes Council (ICC) as an Accessibility / Usability Specialist (#68637). He has also been designated as a Rotational Subject Matter Expert (RSME) by DSA and is contributing to create questions for future CASp examinations. Paul has personally surveyed over 150 million square feet of buildings to determine compliance with the ADA Standards as well as the California Building Code. Mr. Bishop's teaching experience includes 6 years as an instructor of Building Codes at Design Institute of San Diego. He has also delivered educational seminars regarding accessibility for architects, designers, contractors, attorneys and real estate professionals. His firm has also prepared curriculum for statewide training on provisions of the California Building Code through the Division of the State Architect. 



  • AIA Los Angeles Chapter Office at the Wiltern Center, 3780 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 800, Los Angeles, CA 90010 (corner of Western/Wilshire). Parking is available for $10 at the Ralphs/Wiltern Structure or on surrounding side streets, but be sure to read all posted parking signs. Please note that AIA|LA, Ralphs, and the Wiltern do not offer validation for parking. If you park in the Ralphs/Wiltern Structure, park on the third floor or higher and do not park in the spots indicated for Ralphs customers only as you run the risk of being towed.


  • Cancellations made at least one week prior to the class will be refunded in full, less a $10 cancellation and processing fee. No refunds for cancellations will be given after that time. No refunds shall be issued for no-shows to the class. Registration may be transferred to another individual. AIA|LA reserves the right to cancel any class where the minimum number of pre-registration registrants is not met. If such a cancellation occurs, registrants will be notified and given the opportunity to select an alternate and comparable class to attend. In the event such an alternate and comparable class is not available, then the registration fees will be refunded as appropriate. Further, dates, times, classes, program subject matter, instructors, panelists and fees are subject to change, without notice, at any time at the sole and absolute discretion of AIA|LA.
