Today social media platforms are more widely used than their founders in Silicon Valley and around the world ever imagined ten or even five years ago. With the ongoing rise in the popularity of these services has come a concurrent rise in the presence of advertising on these platforms, integrated into the user experience in various ways.
Come join us for a four-person panel to discuss these developments and others.
The problem that we will address is two-fold:
- There is a lack of understanding of the origins of these ads and how they are developed, i.e. what user behavior leads to the ad’s appearance in their sidebar or the like
- There is still some lack of clarity on how much online privacy factors into the situation
This event is designed to explore the modern developments in the advertising field that relate most directly to everyday life and the things we do online throughout a common day, and how government is related to all of it.

Bethany Biskey is the Web Content Manager at Reading Is Fundamental (RIF). She received her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in Political Science and began working for U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) while working on her degree. During her three years writing the Congressman's constituent correspondence as his Legislative Correspondent, she also developed his social media strategy.
In addition to her role at RIF, Bethany serves as an alumni mentor for the University of California's Washington, D.C. program and is the Digital Marketing & Jobs Manager for the Social Media Club’s Washington, D.C. chapter. In her latter capacity, she regularly updates the club's job board and contributes social media content and blog posts.

He is a longtime writer and digital strategist who has worked at Village Voice Media, NBC and several startups in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before this he worked as a TV Reporter and held several other positions at various TV and radio newsrooms in the state of California since 1994.

Steve Sarner brings over 20 years of sales and marketing experience to Tagged from both large Fortune 500 companies as well as a string of successful start ups. He joined Tagged from News Corp’s Fox Interactive Media (FIM) where he led Integrated Sales across FIM’s portfolio of properties including MySpace, IGN, Photobucket, American Idol and Fox.com among others.
Prior to Fox, he spent 7 years with Monster Worldwide as Vice President and National Sales Director. There, he led Monster’s sales & marketing efforts for its social media sites, including Tickle, Ringo and affiliated social networks such as Bebo and Hi5. Steve has been bringing blue chip brands and major advertising agencies social media marketing solutions since the inception of the social networking phenomena in 2003.
Steve’s interactive experience dates back to 1996 and has encompassed senior roles in client side marketing as well as e-commerce and media sales. Positions include Vice President Business Development for Travelscape.com (acquired by Expedia), Vice President Marketing at RealAge.com (Acquired by Hearst) and Vice President Business Solutions for Tickle.com – acquired by Monster Worldwide. Steve holds a Bachelors of Business Administration from California State University Long Beach.
