Coffee + Spinach Harvest at Gibbs Road Farm
Friday, 9 a.m. | 4223 Gibbs Road, Kansas City, Kan. | Alicia Ellingsworth | Join the field crew of the Gibbs Road Farm for micro roasted coffee and spinach picking fun to help get ready for first market on Saturday. The farm sits on 2 acres in Kansas City, Kan., growing food, farmers and community. It’s the home of Cultivate Kansas City. Each year, the farmers harvest some 25,000 pounds of certified organic produce to feed customers at the Brookside Farmers’ Market, CSA members and several local restaurants.

Tour - Niles Home for Children
Friday, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. | 1911 E. 23rd Street, Kansas City, Mo. | Marty Kraft | This peaceful and productive garden is the culmination of years of work to create a healthy alternative to learning, eating and living for students at Niles Home for Children. Each year, the garden has become more sustainable. The latest addition, a hoop house, enhances previous amenities such as outdoor classroom gazebo, a gourd room arbor with a solar panel atop that powers the waterfall fountain in the water garden in the nature area.

Workshop - Seed Savers KC
Friday, 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. | Discovery Center - 4750 Troost, Kansas City, Mo. | Dayna McDaniel | Seed Savers KC realizes the importance of seed saving in maintaining biodiversity, creating a safe food supply, and growing a community of sustainable gardeners by providing non GMO seed and educational resources. We have a Seed Library, seed saving classes, annual seed exchange and plant exchange. Our seed saving class will give the basics needed to start seed saving along with extensive online free sources of several noted experts in the field. Farmers have saved seeds for thousands of years-it’s time this long lost skill becomes commonplace once again. Join Dayna and learn to be a seed saver!

We will enjoy a farm-fresh meal prepared by Craig Howard, chef and owner of Howard's Organic Fare & Vegetable Patch, in a casual setting at City Ice Arts. Howard's uses only the freshest and highest quality local ingredients available, coming from one our own gardens or from local growers and producers in the region.

Tour - Juniper Gardens Training Farm
Friday | Tours at 2 p.m. & 3 p.m. | North 1st Street & Richmond Avenue, Kansas City, Kan. | Rayne Diggins | This year, 16 growers are learning to grow vegetables, fruit, herbs, flowers and mushrooms in Northeast KCK with a goal of farming independently in three to five years! Juniper Gardens Training Farm and Community Gardens serve resettled refugees in the New Roots for Refugees program (co-sponsored by Catholic Charities of N.E. Kansas) and residents of Juniper Gardens Apartment Complex, a public housing facility of the Housing Authority of KCK.

Tour - City Bitty Farm
Friday, 2 - 5 p.m. | 9615 Grandview Road, Kansas City, Mo. | Greg & Jen Garbos | Focused on “all things small,” City Bitty specializes in growing microgreens, edible flowers and garden vegetables year-round for area restaurants and events. Four Season Tools, a company that designs organic vegetable farms across the country, is also located at this site. As engineers, Jen and Greg are well-equipped to use City Bitty as a proving ground for new tools, equipment and farming methods. The farm features a state-of-the-art greenhouse with rainwater capture, automated ventilation, movable benches, and a benchtop radiant heating system.

We are working hard to put the most innovative, accessible, low tech and reproducible solutions for self-sustaining community into the hands of everyday people from the inner-cities to the nations in a way that is caught and spread on a local level. We are putting our ideas into action as we gain the resources, and have already implemented community gardens, aquaponics, solar panels, rain catchment, an upcoming CSA, and more!

Tour - Kansas City Community Gardens
Friday, April 18 | Self-guided tours all day | 6917 Kensington Avenue, Kansas City, Mo. | Kansas City Community Gardens has been helping low income gardeners grow food in backyards and community gardens for over 35 years. Our main office includes 90 ground plots and 59 raised beds that we rent to local gardeners. Our beanstalk children's garden is also located at our main site. Not much is growing right now, but the office is bustling with gardeners purchasing seeds, plants and fertilizer for the year.

If you are traveling to Kansas City to hear Dr. Vandana Shiva speak on Thursday, April 17, Cultivate Kansas City invites you to stay on Friday to connect with farmers and growers in our community and from around the region. On Friday and Saturday we have organized a variety of activities for you to learn, connect and grow with us! Check out the lineup below and sign up for what you are interested in. Most activities are free, a few require purchase of food.
