Sexual assault of Persons with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities:

 

how to empower and support recovery

The Building Partnerships for the Protection of Persons with Disabilities Initiative (BPI) with additional support received by the Disabled Persons Protection Commission (DPPC) from the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with Department of Public Health (DPH), Riverside Community Care, Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, Department of Developmental Services (DDS), Massachusetts Advocates Standing Strong and other stakeholders invite you to attend the day-long, multi-disciplinary training entitled.

There is no cost for participants to attend.  The training is limited to 60 participants. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Participants are required to register for the training within or closest to your primary work location. Registration and any accommodations  required must be requested and completed  two weeks prior to the training.  Continuing education units (CEUS) will be available. 

Training topics will include:

  • Why adults with I/DD are at particularly high risk for sexual assault

  • Introduction to intellectual/developmental disabilities    

  • Introduction to sexuality of adults with I/DD                                               

  • The neuro-physiology of trauma                                          

  • Regional services provided by MA Rape Crisis Centers

  • Addressing the challenges to effectively serve adults with I/DD
  • Learning and practicing concrete skills 

  • Team building exercises: Regional Sexual Assault Liaisons

Regional team building will include introductions of liaisons within DDS, DPPC, Rape Crisis Centers, and the Awareness & Action program.

Participants will leave the training with concrete skills by learning:

  1. Three ways in which sexual assault impacts survivors with I/DD;
  2. Three accommodations/modifications to existing state-funded services to help meet the needs of survivors with I/DD; and
  3. Names, contact information, and available state-funded victim services for persons with I/DD in your geographical area.
