Have you ever thought of a chef as being a creative improviser? Chef Paul Canales of Duende calls his fare "culinary improvisation". Rather than work with the same motif over and over, he prefers taking fresh approaches to food he's made before. The same can be said for musical improvisation. Musical improvisers work within the confines of instrumentation (as the kitchen uses protein, starch, vegetable) and in the case of the Acá trio, musical motifs that reoccur but never sound the same way twice. Both Chef and band will be stepping out into the unknown, trying to find common languages between art forms and thriving in the excitement of not knowing what comes next!
For one magical evening Chef Paul Canales and the Acá trio will be stepping into the unknown to spontaneously create food and music simultaneously. The result will be a conversation - each influencing the other. The Acá trio will provide the perfect backdrop for Canales' culinary improvisations by playing it's usual otherworldly electro-acoustic ambiance. The band will interact with Canales as he's projected on an 8'X10' canvas in the mezzanine above the stage. Canales will have a live feed sent into the kitchen where the music will enhance Duende's food juju.
Paul Canales is a locally and nationally acclaimed Oakland-based chef who is passionate about creating culinary improvisations from local sources and mediterranean-based cultural touch points. With Duende, he uses his own cultural background, spanish and basque cushiness, and their many influences as jumping off points.
Acá is an electro-acoustic trio improvising soundscapes that are futuristic and hyper-real while at the same time retaining an earthy quality. Acá create layers of texture and color by manipulating and looping reeds such as baritone sax, alto sax and bass clarinet with heavily processed guitar, bowed and plucked upright electric bass and laptop. The sound worlds can be optimistic, ironic, may depict modern urban chaos or abstractions of ancient prehistoric animals.
