On April 23rd, 2014 Abraham Noel committed suicide in his University of North Florida dorm room. We have all been affected by this in ways we want no one to experience. Although pained with confusion and grief, we, his closest friends, have chosen to press forward with faith and perseverance. We refuse to allow his death be in vain so we press forward by creating the event Abraham Noel’s Tournament of Hope. Through this event we hope to gather friends, teammates, and community members to enjoy two of Abraham’s most favorite sports, Basketball and Track & Field. In doing so, we will raise awareness about youth suicide. This is relevant to us all; according to US data, “for every youth suicide completion, there are nearly 400 suicide attempts.” We refuse to go another day with these numbers. We are therefore hosting this event to raise awareness about this tragedy. In hosting this tournament, we aim to encourage participants, family members, friends, and visitors that there is another option. We aim to present a day wherein someone can find joy and assistance if suicidal thoughts have taken refuge in their mind. This is where we need you. This is why we press forward during this trying time to remember our friend, find peace, and encourage others who are striving to live a life in the memory of a loved one who has committed suicide. This tournament will give hope to many people.
We aim to invite 12 teams of five to compete in a day long tournament as friends and family members reminisce the time shared enjoying Abraham play his favorite sport. If there is a higher demand for teams to participate, the number of teams will increase. Each team is required to pay a $20 entrance fee. A shirt will be included in the price for basketball participants. Players must be ages 17 and up. Winners of the tournament will recieve an Abraham's Tourament Of Hope trophy. We will also have an ongoing walk-a-thon, wherein individuals pledge to walk according to their donations.Walkers do not need to pre-register and will be not be charged to walk by the organizers of the event. Those who want to do the dunk contest can sign up the day of the event, also FREE. Participants for the basketball tournament will not be needing a paper ticket as a list of names will be present on the day of the event. There will not be a refund offered in events of personal cancellations or rain checks. The profits made from the event will be donated to the family members of Abraham Noel and to a local Suicide Prevention Coalition.
