Always interested in tribal style but did not know where to start? This weekend will give you the history, technique, and understanding of tribal style bellydancing, from its very roots, that you have been waiting for. Internationally renowned star April Rose has recently chosen Austin, Texas to open her own studio and we welcome her to San Antonio for the first time. April's methodical approach to teaching will benefit novices and experienced tribal style dancers alike.
An educated and traveled bellydancer of 14 years, April Rose is a former member of Bellydance Superstars and UNMATA. She holds a Masters degree in Culture and Performance from UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures/Dance Department, where she has also holds a BA in Dance. Her research explores the transnational history of bellydance since the mid-19th century and the many incarnations of bellydance practice in the post-1960’s US. A dynamic and encouraging teacher, she is trained in choreographic method, various dance techniques, and critical dance theory, and uses all of these skills in her thoughtful, rigorous, and playful approach to teaching bellydance to students all over the world.
Tribal Improv – ATS, ITS, SGI…..WTF? With her background in the Hot Pot Improvisational Tribal Style of Amy Sigil and informed understanding of Carolina Nericcio’s American Tribal Style and Jamila Salimpour’s Bal Anat Tribal Style, April Rose will lead the workshop participants to gain an overall understanding of Tribal Style bellydance. Through movement and a bit of history, students can expect to leave the class with basic competence in the structure and movement values of Tribal Improv. Students will also gain knowledge about the origins and development of Tribal Style.
Detailed Full-Bodied Movement – Our mission: we are bellydancers with expressive hips and core who are determined not to forget the expression in our limbs, fingers, and gaze! In this class we will learn combinations that set an intention and quality of movement for every part of our bodies, at once. Our arms will carve the space, we will direct our gaze, and our hands will not be forgotten as we work with our core. Using bellydance isolations and layering as a base structure for our movement, we will focus our energies on filling it out -with strong lines and purposeful arms, while filling it in with the details to make it sing.
