OUR PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE
On Saturday, January 18, 2014, celebrate being part of a vast, socially diverse culture and community!
The Third Annual "A Taste of Belly Dance: Los Angeles" Festival is offering another healthy sampling of the best that Los Angeles has to offer!
Geared toward spotlighting the artists, entrepreneurs and educators within our blossoming belly dance community, we hope to share the beauty of this dance with all of Los Angeles.
Each year, we try to bring the festival to YOU, and this year, we are proud to be able to host our event in another of Los Angeles County's beautiful cities: EL SEGUNDO!
Smoky Hollow Studios is an easy commute, has plenty of free parking and is a change from the busy streets of Hollywood. The amazing industrial warehouse has a vast 5400 square feet of open space for us to shop and dance in!
Surrounded by authentic rustic cinder block, there are also numerous original metal framed windows allowing for
stunning, ever-changing natural light.
Equipped with two fully handicap accessible restrooms, comforting furniture design and the most amazing French country style kitchen
, all of it leaving you wondering whether you are in a New York loft, a European hideaway...or perhaps in good old El Segundo.
We never quite realize how large and beautiful our county is, and this year we want to hold it in one of our neighboring cities!
SMOKY HOLLOW STUDIOS
Saturday, January 18, 2014
10:30 am - 3:10 pm
Just as last year, there will be two full workshop offerings as well as a free mini-workshop to introduce you to and give you another taste of one of L.A.'s amazing teachers!
We are introducing a new "Taste" format of workshops this year! These workshops will be sold as bundles, with each subject being broken down into three 40-minute segments and taught three different teachers with a specific focus on aspects of that genre!
Bundles may not be broken up or sold separately, but are offered at a price you cannot resist: only $36.00 for a bundle of three classes! That's two hours and ten minutes with three amazing teachers for only $36.00 per bundle!
This years' genre workshops will be: A "Taste of Technique" and A "Taste of American Cabaret"!
Let us introduce you to the workshop instructors and bundles!:
"TASTE OF TECHNIQUE" - 10:30am - 12:40pm
NASILA - "Shimmies and Shapes"
10:30am - 11:10am
A belly dancer's goal is to be the visual representation of the music. Learn how to safely draw shapes with your body to form the most basic of belly dance moves. Then, explore the many shimmies and vibrations that dancers use to embellish these shapes and highlight a song's percussive sections. We'll explore lines, circles, and figure eights, then work on powerful standing shimmies and techniques for using shimmies with traveling moves.
MICHAELLA - "Layer It On"
11:15am - 11:55am
This Taste of Belly Dance workshop will focus on developing polished layers and incorporating them into a dynamic dance combination. Learn methods for fluid arms, traveling patterns and to systematically layer isolations. We will wrap up with a short combintion incorporating our new layered sequence.
Open to all levels, this workshop is designed to be accessible and challenging for the experienced beginner to the advanced dancer.
GIGI - "Traveling and Turns"
12:00am - 12:40am
Don't "turn" your back on turns! Turns add drama, elegance, and flair to a performance, and they are also a great way to travel. This workshop will give you a few do-able, at-home exercises to perfect your turn by helping you discover your center of gravity and find your visual spot. Build your bellydance vocabulary with a few turns (3 point, attitude, and drag) and learn 1-2 traveling turn combos that you'll be able to immediately incorporate in your dance.
Socks or ballet slippers recommended.
FREE MINI WORKSHOP - 12:42pm - 12:57pm
LEON - "Ethno Fusion Belly Dance"
12:42pm - 12:57pm
This class will warm you up and get you going as it fuses solid latin dance techniques --- from samba to cha-cha-cha --- to salsa and flamenco, as well as influences from African dances, with belly dance!
*This class is gratis, but please feel free to make a donation to the instructor if you are moved!
"TASTE OF AMERICAN CABARET" - 1:00pm - 3:10pm
HELENA - "Stage Entrances and Finales"
1:00pm - 1:40pm
Helena will show you different approaches to making your Entrances and Finales appropriate, yet strong for the venue of your performance. Navigate large stages or dance floors with more traveling steps and turns to make good use of the large space, and utilize props such as Veils, Isis wings or Fan Veils to amplify your performance. From small spaces to large, Helena will show you ways to create and effectively make your performance fabulous without over-dramatizing it in a small space or leaving a large space un-used.
JENNA - "Classic Cabaret Veil"
1:45pm - 2:25pm
In this workshop, Jenna will focus on the 2nd part of the classic 5-part bellydance routine that she learned from Serena of NYC. Never choreographed, always creative, the dancer enters swathed in her chiffon veil, zilling away to an energetic beat…as the rhythm slows to a 'rhumba' or 'bolero', she slowly and artfully unwrapps herself from the temporary covering, dancing all the while. Jenna will introduce different wraps and sample several ways to maneuver your way out of them while painting your stage with color and framing your movements with mystery.
Please bring your own veil -- preferably a see-through chiffon rather than silk.
KAMALA - "Preparing Your Improvisational Solo"
2:30pm - 3:10pm
An improvisational solo can be the most liberating and breathtaking form of Raqs Sharki! Yet feeling comfortable and prepared for this type of performance can be daunting. Kamala will walk you through her methods of preparation, and shares tips for a more dramatic presentation, cultivated from over 30 years of experience.
Also, as with every year, we are giving to a charity in need. This year, a portion of your show ticket will be donated to Direct Relief to aid the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
