The line-up of Austrian chefs at our “A Taste of Austria” event on October 19 is impressive. Among those who will present their mouthwatering creations and innovative takes on traditional Austrian dishes are:
Kurt Gutenbrunner, chef and co-owner of New York City’s Wallsé, Café Sabarsky, and Blaue Gans, has earned abundant praise for his modern interpretation of Austrian cuisine and his seamless integration of food and art. He has recently been bestowed the Merit in Gold of the Republic of Austria.
Chefs Wolfgang Ban and Eduard Frauneder from Seasonal combine traditional techniques and contemporary innovations to update some of their favorite childhood dishes. Their newest venue, Edi & The Wolf opened in the Lower East Side in 2010.
Erwin Schrottner and his partner Andrew Chase are known for their decidedly upscale take on well-crafted Austrian comfort food. Smoked-to-order plump sausages and bacon wrapped pork sausages filled with Emmentaler cheese are just a few of the Austrian delicacies these former veterans of the Mark Hotel and the Monkey Bar have on offer.
Heidi Riegler focuses on the sweet side of Austria and will delight you with cookies baked fresh at her "Vienna Cookie Company."
A Taste of Culture, a special treat
Autumn in Austria’s legendary wine country is a closely guarded secret among veteran travelers. Thinner crowds, the rush of harvest, a bevy of world-class cultural events combine to create an unforgettable trip. But this fall, we will bring the wine country to you.
Join us for “A Taste of Austria” and sample unique varietals such as the Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s flagship variety grown on broad riverbanks along the Danube. Take a sip of this distinctive, full-bodied white wine that pairs so well with food dishes which are difficult to match. Be surprised by the sophistication of Vienna’s unique varietal called Gemischter Satz, a traditional white field blend. American wine journalist Alice Feiring praised it as “complex,” with flavors ranging from “mineral to honeysuckle,” and even a “touch of skunk”. Or discover the wines of Burgenland, which is Austria’s red wine capital. They produce wines of velvet and spice, such as Zweigelt’s, a popular hybrid of two other Austrian reds, berry rich Blaufränkisch and earthy St. Laurent. Among the wines featured will be one of Austria’s best kept secret, the Sauvignon Blanc from Styria, a beautiful white wine that entices with scents of just-ripe red currant, white pepper and lime.
We hope to see you this fall when the Austrian wine country beckons you with its splendor!
Please note: In order to attend this event participants must be 21 years of age or older. ID will be checked at door. Tickets are non-refundable.
