Shanti's Breast Cancer Program

Shanti’s Breast Cancer Program is one of San Francisco's most highly regarded breast cancer support programs. Each year we provide critical one-on-one services to over 450 of San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents diagnosed with breast cancer.  Begun in 2001, our services target low-income/uninsured women, the majority of whom are women of color and live 200% below the poverty level.

Since our inception, Shanti’s Breast Cancer Program has linked our vital services to all local hospitals and clinics in San Francisco. Our unique combination of culturally and linguistically competent Care Navigation services coupled with individualized emotional support offered in the comfort of a client’s home, hospital room or our office, help clients to access medical care, maintain treatment regimens and enjoy an improved quality of life with better health outcomes. Our free services include: Care Navigation, Health Education & Survivorship Series and Shanti’s Volunteer Care-Giver Program - all offered in Cantonese, English, Mandarin and Spanish.

Our 2011 Client Survey is a testament to the success and positive effect of our work. Last year, clients reported that thanks to our services and comprehensive partner collaborations (including Breast Cancer Emergency Fund and Project Open Hand):

(1)  100% were able to access medical treatment;

(2)  93% were able to complete their chosen treatment regimen; and

(3)  98% agreed that their quality of life and knowledge of emergency resources improved as a result of our services.

Our Care Navigators and Volunteer Care Givers:

  • Accompany an average of 10 clients per week to medical and social services appointments to translate and/or advocate;
  • Provide in-home practical & emotional support to an average of 25 clients per week
  • Distribute approximately 1,200 taxi vouchers per year to clients for medical appointments and critical errands
  • Assist newly diagnosed clients with successfully applying for an average of $1,400 in emergency financial aid for medical bills, rent/ utilities, transportation and food

Thank you for supporting our important work!
