A talk by the Honorable Jim McLay, CNZM, QSO, New Zealand’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations

What happens when a small, determinedly independent state seeks a two-year, non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council? Jim McLay, New Zealand's Ambassador to the United Nations, traces his country's independent stance on many global issues, from the disastrous 1915 military campaign in the Dardanelles, through the League of Nations, the 1945 San Francisco conference, and policy differences with the US and other major powers, to its present day role as a trusted and innovative bridge-builder between various UN factions.

The talk will be followed by a buffet lunch.

About the presenter: Jim McLay has been New Zealand’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York since June 2009. He was a Member of Parliament from 1975 to 1987, serving as Deputy Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and received the Queens Service Order (QSO) for public services.
