Ayurveda is the medical system and sister philosophy to Yoga. Ayurveda focuses on preventing disease and maintaining good health with appropriate diet, lifestyle and herbal preparations, which best serve our unique bodies. Although an excellent system to help keep us healthy, the knowledge can be a little inaccessible.
Join Deacon and Corey in this practical and approachable two-hour class, where you will learn:
- A brief history of Ayurveda and its applied sciences
- The five-element theory
- Your specific body type
- The three-doshas/seven body-types of Ayurveda
- How to easily balance your body type through seasonal food and lifestyle choices
- Yoga poses for balancing your body type or removing imbalances
- Simple tips on how to sleep well, maintain your weight and have better overall health
75 minutes will be dedicated to understanding the basics of Ayurveda.
45 minutes will be dedicated to learning yoga poses to best balance each body type.
All participants will be given comprehensive handouts, which will help you stay engaged with maintaining your health goals.

Deacon Carpenter & Corey Loftus
Based in San Francisco’s Bay Area, Deacon Carpenter works with patients from every walk of life who have many unique health conditions. He believes an accessible approach to Ayurveda is the key to achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
At the age of 16, illness and obesity led Deacon to a fateful meeting with a local Ayurvedic doctor, which created a shift in Deacon’s perception of food, health and physical balance. Heeding the advice of his doctor, Deacon modified his diet, started to practice yoga and shed over 140 pounds. To Deacon, Ayurveda and yoga together just made sense. Once he was educated and empowered to understand what was causing him to be sick, the steps to reclaiming his health were clear and simple.
Deacon also teaches a practical approach to Ayurveda at Maharishi University of Management, educated medical professionals at Scripps Integrated Medical Center, San Diego and is the creator of the VedaBar – the first real nutrition bar based on Ayurvedic principles.
Corey grew up in Columbia, MD with lots of space and lots of love. His first experience with mindfulness practice was playing “the attention game” in the Hap Ki Do dojang. The instructor and students were allowed to do anything but touch you to make you laugh or break stillness. He always outlasted everyone. Corey attained his first degree black belt in 1996. After some time away to focus on teenage things, he returned to teach Hap Ki Do classes for a year in high school.
While attending Elon University, he discovered the Tibetan Bon tradition of Yoga, taught by Ann Roberts, the first teacher given permission to pass on the Trul Khor practice in the US. After moving to New York City and studying with numerous teachers, Corey took class with Isaac Pena and was moved. Corey completed his 200-hr RYT training with Isaac at Sankalpah Yoga in 2010. He learned the practice of Reciprocity, Pilates, and Applied Neo Yogic Awareness with Courtney Bauer and Johnson Chong at Studio Anya in 2012.
Corey has studied therapeutic flying and thai massage with Adam Rinder and Jennifer Yarro, and acrobatic flying and handstands with Jason Nemer, Chris Loebsack, Greg Franklin, Mary Aranas, and Matt Giordano. He currently teaches public and private yoga classes in New York City.
