Join us for a creative evening featuring AOB-made artwork,

artmaking, music, and delicious fare from area eateries!

Arts on the Block (AOB), which serves youth with a passion for creativity, is taking up residence on a block in DC for the summer. The Montgomery County-based non-profit has been providing creative teens with real-life work experiences in the visual arts for ten years.  Arts on the Block will pilot its signature “Pour Your ART Out” program in Washington, DC (PYAO-DC).  AOB and project partner Urban Alliance will turn the Pepco Edison Place Gallery into a creative workshop for AOB’s Apprentices to learn and work from July 8 through August 8.  The gallery, which is open to the public, will exhibit AOB artwork as well as works by AOB Alumni.  The Pepco Edison Place Gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Friday, noon to 4:00 p.m.  Admission to the gallery is free.

PYAO transforms talented teens into apprentice artists by teaching them art and helping them develop job skills that can be used in any career.  Apprentices work in teams on artwork that has been commissioned by an array of public and private clients. They also work on individual projects.  In the process, they learn about teamwork, professionalism and entrepreneurship.  PYAO-DC apprentices are recruited and paid through the DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s 2014 Summer Youth Employment Program.  They come from diverse backgrounds and represent an array of neighborhoods and schools throughout the District.

Apprentice Artists receive professional training from AOB teaching artists, visiting arts and design professionals and from project partners,Urban Alliance and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.  Seasoned artist and educator, Sonal Sheth, and her assistant, Danielle Hedquist (a former AOB Apprentice Artist herself), will guide apprentice artwork.

Arts on the Block is the only organization in the Washington, DC area offering youth the opportunity to learn about the intersection of art, design, and business by engaging them in real-world art projects. Today, hundreds of individual artworks — from park benches to large-scale murals — grace public and private spaces throughout the area. These commissions transform neighborhoods and youth in their pursuit of creativity, collaboration and community.
