Live Artists merge contemporary art, sound and technology at the Museum of Science

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT, May 2013, Boston, MA -  Together Festival, an annual celebration of music, art and technology, based in Cambridge, MA has brought their collaboration with local artists and curators to a new level. Among the many exhibitions and panels slated to take place this May, an momentous partnership between Together, the Museum of Science, Boston, and experimental curator Maggie Cavallo has culminated in, A New Cosmic Mix: now in 5D!, an exhibition of live sound and image at the Charles Hayden Planetarium.

A New Cosmic Mix: now in 5D! will feature HEXbeam by Vela Phelan,LOOSE by D’hana Perry,BATHAUS,Bobby Andres and a video transmission with Yassy Goldie. Through the combination of live sound and moving image, these artists skillfully execute contemporary techniques of appropriation such as sampling, cutting and editing. Loosely inspired by La Raza Cósmica (1925), an essay written by Mexican philosopher José Vasconcelos, along with contemporary theoretical models that have co-opted the term ‘remix’ as a way to study and describe culture and an interest in the 5th Dimension, Cavallo sought out live artists whose work celebrates and challenges our relationships with identity and the cosmos.

From the Curator: “This event will not only showcase quality work by contemporary artists, but will also highlight the cosmic exchange common in our community that takes places between live artists. This exchange disregards the pedantic nature of traditional learning and instead often takes place in nightclubs and alternative gallery spaces, offering the audience a temporary, yet transcendental experience through art, sound and new technologies. In A New Cosmic Mix: now in 5D! we are excited to incite in the audience the urge to reconsider themselves, their world and the worlds beyond their own. This event would have not been possible without the dedication of Together Festival’s Visual Art Coordinator, Alexis Avedisian and the interest and support of both Together and the Museum of Science in the contemporary art community in Boston, MA. I am thrilled to imagine what sort of collaborations are ahead due to the courageous initiatives of both of these great organizations.”

Together Boston

Together Boston is an annual celebration of music, art and technology, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The festival was first held in February, 2010, with a  primary focus on electronic dance music. As the festival has evolved however, its laser focus has shifted to encompass a broader scope of musical genres as well as a thorough exploration of the art and technology sectors.

Through a week-long series of educational and professional discussion panels, art installations, film screenings, and musical performances at venues around the Boston/Cambridge area, Together Festival has attracted around 20,000 attendees per year. Although historically based in Boston, the festival has found its footing across the Charles River in Central Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts and expects to be working closely with Cambridge City Hall in 2015.

2014 saw a number of special musical events including Bob Mould playing in Cambridge to celebrate the 10th anniversary of gay marriage, Chicago soul champions The Numero Group visiting Boston's legendary Soulelujah team and the debut of an experimental live lab in Inman Square's LilyPad featuring leading lights of Massachusetts' psychedelic rock community such as Major Stars, Sunburned Hand of the Man and internationally recognized sound designerKeith Fullerton Whitman. Other guests from 2014 included Detroit techno legend Robert Hood, Brooklyn's Mos Def, Germany's Tensnake and Norway'sCashmere Cat, most recently responsible for producing a single for Ariana Grande.

In 2013, Together hosted internationally-known musical artists such as Flying Lotus from Los Angeles, Four Tet from London, Crystal Castles and Grammy-nominee Duke Dumont, both from Toronto, Oscar-winner Juicy J with A$AP FergZomby and more.

In 2012, Together hosted musical artists such as Photek, RJD2, Mala,Todd Edwards, Dillon Francis, Nero, Phill Niblock, 6th Borough Project and more, while hosting film screenings for the Chemical Brothers movie Don’t Think, as well as the Electric Daisy Carnival documentary.
