Event Details

A Country House Lecture
with Mac Griswold, author of The Manor: Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island

DATE: Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
LOCATION: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Grace Auditorium One Bungtown Road (off Rt. 25A), Laurel Hollow

Sylvester Manor, a 17th century plantation turned Country House, once commanded all 8,000 acres of Shelter Island and its diverse story stretches from Long Island to Europe, Africa, and the West Indies. The remaining property and c. 1737 Georgian house have been in the same family for eleven generations, and have evolved gradually - through the layering of time - into a palimpsest that encapsulates over 300 years of American history.  Ms. Griswold will tell us how she first learned of the property and what was found in a hidden vault including a letter from Thomas Jefferson and the land's original 1666 manor charter.

"I climb back into the rowboat, stunned.  This place isn't self-consciously 'historic'; it's not restored in any sense.  It has simply been here, waiting for time to pass.  Waiting for me." - Mac Griswold, from The Manor

Followed by book signing and wine and cheese reception at SPLIA Headquarters, 161 Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor.
