A Civil War Double Feature

As part of its ongoing Cultures in Motion series, the National Portrait Gallery presents “In Haste, Laura Keene” and “The Road from Appomattox,” two short plays about characters from the Civil War: a portrait of Laura Keene, the actress/producer of Our American Cousin, the play being performed at Ford’s theatre the night President Lincoln was assassinated; and an imagined final conversation between Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, commissioned and first produced by Ford’s Theatre

Broad in scope, the series is designed to educate, entertain, and promote mutual understanding of the diverse cultures that make up both the NPG collection and the mosaic of American heritage.
