WORD POWER is an annual signature experience that allows our supporters to not only celebrate the vital literary arts programming that we have championed for over a decade, but to also witness the power and impact of what we do.
Urban Word NYC is pleased to announce this year's Honorary Chair, Emmy Award winner and star of the Showtime hit series, Homeland, Mandy Patinkin, and honorees, Lemon Andersen, Mali Locke and Deirdre Hanbury . You and your guests will become part of the event which will feature poetic cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, interactive spoken word performances, an awards reception and live entertainment by Tha Unit!
It will be an awesome night and we hope you will be able to join us to celebrate those who champion our cause - YOUTH VOICE!

Urban Word NYC
Urban Word NYC champions the voices of New York City youth by providing platforms for critical literacy, youth development and leadership through free and uncensored writing, college prep, scholarships, and performance opportunities.
We believe that free self-expression – matured in an enhanced critical literacy environment – improves self-confidence and strengthens educational achievement for NYC’s inner city youth. We promote active literacy, critical thought, and positive social dialogue across boundaries of age, race, class, gender, culture, and sexuality. Our many workshops are designed to enhance critical thinking skills, leadership, and to ignite a personal commitment to growth and learning which leads to heightened in school performance, and greater interest in pursuing higher education.
