One in a Million: A Benefit for the Chordoma Foundation
Chordomas are rare but deadly cancers that affect the bones of the skull and spine. They are difficult to treat and tend to be relentless. The Chordoma Foundation was founded by chordoma survivor Josh Sommer and his mother. Since 2007 it has been working to accelerate research and improve the lives of patients and their families affected by chordomas. On Friday December 13 Motorco Music Hall will host the One in a Million Benefit to fight chordoma, featuring The Old Ceremony, Peter Holsapple and Sea Cow. There will be a raffle for musical prizes, food and drink specials.
The Old Ceremony
The Old Ceremony makes music so potent that you may go blind listening to it. But don't worry, canes are in this season. After six highly acclaimed albums and nine years of touring the US, Canada, and, most recently, Europe, the Durham/Chapel Hill, NC band has built a large and loyal following. TOC has performed with lots of well-known bands. Rock critics have written about them in their publications. TOC's newest album, Fairytales and Other Forms of Suicide, was released Aug 21, 2012 on Yep Roc Records. TOC is figureheaded by songwriter Django Haskins, and includes bassist Jeff Crawford, drummer Dan Hall, vibes/organist Mark Simonsen, and violinist/keyboardist Gabriele Pelli.
Peter Livingston Holsapple (born February 19, 1956) formed, along with Chris Stamey, the singing, songwriting, and guitar-playing core of the dB's, a jangle-pop band from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He became the band's principal songwriter and singer after Stamey's departure. The dB's were at the forefront of the guitar bands from the southeast in the 1980s along with R.E.M., Let's Active, etc. The dB's never achieved the prominence of R.E.M. but were critically recognized and are still greatly appreciated today. The band, with Stamey back in the fold, has reformed with new material in 2005-2006.
Sea Cow is: Misha Angrist, DJ James, Jody Maxwell, Jennie Peters, Andrew Snee. Established 2006.
