About the Library Benefit Concerts...
In 2004, a slightly bewildered Patti Smith stood on stage at the Sunset Center in Carmel and rhetorically asked, "What am I doing here?"
Little did she know.
Thanks to the persistence and brilliance of promoter Jesse Goodman Presents, Patti headlined the first-ever benefit for the non-profit Henry Miller Memorial Library, known then a sleepy, quirky bookstore perched on the Pacific coast.

Fast-forward to 2013. In some ways, not much has changed. You can go into the Library any day and find it as it was back in 2003: a welcoming, peaceful oasis amongst the redwoods where - according to lore - "nothing happens." But nothing's quite as simple as it seems.
Since Patti first strode on the Sunset stage, Jesse Goodman has continued to curate annual benefits for the Library, including Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Henry Rollins, DJ Spooky, and most recently, Rufus Wainwright. Not coincidentally, the Library also developed a reputation during the intervening years as one of the preeminent arts centers in the country, offering workshops, musical events, film screening series, and so much more.
In fact 2013, marks the 10th fundraiser curated under Jesse's steady hand.
Attendees will witness an intimate, unforgettable performance in one of the greatest outdoor venues in the world. (Think a cozy supper club dropped in the middle of an outdoor redwood grove.) The event will also include a meet and greet with Father John Misty prior to the show, VIP tables including table service, and signed posters.
Opening the show will be poets Anne Waldman, Ambrose Bye and Sara Goodman.
But attendees will also be part of history. The Henry Miller Memorial Library has recently submitted plans with Monterey County to create a sustainable, ADA-compliant space that will serve visitors, artists, and musicians for years to come. Your support will help make these plans a reality, all while celebrating the 10th benefit curated by Jesse Goodman. The symbolism is dizzying!
So please join us at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, CA on Sept. 19th for our 10th benefit concert.
