Event Details

Russian Cultural Center “Our Texas”is pleased to announce its 7th Annual Russian Documentary Showcase in Texas “Images of Russia”.

This year we will present the following movies: “Tomorrow” by Andrey Gryazev, “Born in the USSR: 28 and Up” by Sergey Miroshnichenko and “A Bitter Taste of Freedom” by Marina Goldovskaya.

Our honored guests are directors Andrey Gryazev and Maria Miro. They will present their movies and participate in Q&A sessions.

“Tomorrow” is the film is about the most striking occurrence in contemporary art in Russia, the art-group Voina (War). Their courageous political statements leave nobody indifferent (and disturb absolutely everybody). They live in the present, hoping that tomorrow they can change everything.

“Born in the USSR: 28 Up” is the fourth movie of series about modern Russia and the former Soviet Union. The movie gives an insight into eight different people’s lives, daily struggles, broken dreams and a small amount of happiness. The film crew chose children from different republics, backgrounds and social levels and asked them questions about life, religion, politics and hopes for the future every seven years again, so when they were 7, 14, 21 and now 28 years old. The viewer is presented with one person after another and a warm narration calmly bridges the different and very intimate parts.

“A Bitter Taste of Freedom” is the movie about Anna Politkovskaya, an investigative journalist for Moscow's liberal Novaya Gazeta. She was often the only spokesperson for victims of the Chechen War. At age 48 she was assassinated for simply doing her job. Shot over a period of 20 years, this exclusive footage creates an incredible story of a woman who consciously gave her life for her convictions.
