Learning Disabilities Conference Free to Attendees:  Parents, Educators, Professionals all Invited!

Sponsored by: Redemptorist Elementary School, LaBIDA (Louisiana Branch of International Dyslexia Association); and CHADD, LA Chapter (Children and Adults with ADD/ADHD); Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation, Jefferson Oaks Behavioral Health, GBR Literacy Coalition, Mire Consulting, The Brighton School, The Neuropsychology Center of LA, and Access to Better Communicaiton (ABC).

Karen England, BS in Elementary Education, Certified in Special Ed, Learining Disabilities, Dyslexia Specialist; 25+ years teaching experience; Lead Teacher in the Language Lab for Dyslexia, Redemptorist Elementary School Title:  Multi-Sensory Learning in Action!  Come visit our lab and let some of our star students demonstrate ways they are becoming fluent readers and show how their hard work is paying off!

Darlyne Nemeth, PhD, MP, MPAP; Clinical, Medical, and Neuropsychologist, The Neuropsychology Center of Louisiana, LLC.  Title: Interventions for Working Memory Problems in Attentional Disorders; Presentation includes discussion of educational, cognitive-behavioral, and psychopharmacological intervention approaches.

Georgann Mire, Education Consultant, Founder of this Conference, Aunt of CW Autsin. Title:  Simulation: Experience the Frustrations of Learning Disabilities!  Includes: dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphyia, dyscalculia, and auditory processing issues.

Belynda Gauthier, Coordinator of LA Capitol Area CHADD (Children and Adults with ADD/ADHD)  Title:  ADHD in the Classroom.  Effects of ADHD on behavior and performance, with tips for intervention strategies that increase success.

Kesha Burton,  Disabilities Services Counselor, Baton Rouge Community College.  Title:  What's Next? Transition to College.  Provides resources to parents, counselors, teachers for childlren who have reached the end of high school.  Local and regional information, programs, and resources.

Jane Morton, PhD, BCBA-D; Licensed Psychologist, ABA Home-Based Program, Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation.  Title: The Application of Applied Behavior Analysis to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  Presentation will include diagnostic criteria, prevalence, evidence based treatment overview, and behavioral strategies to use at home and at school for some very challenging behaviors.

Sandra Trammell, RN.  Autism Resource Specialist, Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge; Parent of two children on the ASD Spectrum.  Topic:  Autistic Spectrum Disorder:  Positive Behavioral Supports in the Home.  Practical, everyday solutions to some of the most common issues facing parents and teachers of kids on the spectrum, and ideas about how to improve challenging behaviors. 

Barbara Germany, MA, CCC-SLP, Director of Developmental Learning, McKay Academic Center, The Dunham School.  Title:  A Picture Tells a Thousand Words:  The Use of Visual Supports, Social Stories (with pictures/videos), and other Techniques for Students with Autism.  Various visual supports and the need for a team approach will be covered.

Sheran Samuel Benton, MA, CCC-SLP, RDI Certified, Clinic Director and Co-Owner, Access to Better Communication (ABC).  Title:  Language, Learning Disabilities and Classroom Accommodations.  Info about Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Auditory Processing Disorder, ideas for creative accommodations. 

Kara Shupe, Inclusive Education Advocate, Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge.  Title: My Child Has a Learning Disabiiity, Now What?  Overview of education law governing kids with LDs, advocacy tips

Steven Bordelon, LCSW. Title:  Unifying Behavioral Management and Skills Training.  Alternative methods for managing behavioral problems, highlighting the use of Ross Greene, PhD's model of Collaborative Problem Solving to help manage behaviors in the home and at school.

Patsy Keenan, BS.  Title: Dyscalculia, Definition and Accommodations to Increase Success.  Overview of signs, symptoms, and methods to increase academic success with math and math concepts.

Miriam Aretsky, LCSW  Title: Operating from Your Values when Working with Children who have Learning Disabilities. Learn to develop, access, and implement values oriented behaviors in your parenting or work with LD kids, rather than responding solely from emotions and thoughts.

Steven Felix, MD.  Title: An Update on Autism from a Medical Perspective.  Overview of brain abnormalities, latest research into causes of ASD, overview of therapies, basic behavior management strategies.

Counseling Staff of Episcopal High School:  Robin Talamo, LCSW; Alicia Kelly, LPC, Sara LeBlanc, LCSW.  Title:  Life Success for Children with Learning Disabilities.  Learn which character traits and values to encourage and develop in the LD children you live and/or work with, to increase their chances of reaching their full potential.

John Hamilton, PhD, Neuropsychology Center of Louisiana, LLC  Title: The Current and Future Efficacy of Emotion Perception Assessment Instruments in the Evaluation of  Childrens' Emotion Processing Abilities.  Learn how a computerized emotion perception instrument could change the assessment and maybe the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.  


Continuing Education Units:  Applications Have Been Approved for LPCs by the LCA:  4 hours of credit toward license renewal.Speech-Language Pathologists/Audiologists. 4 hours of CEU's in the Related Area have been approved by the LBESLPA.  Social Workers:  LABSWE has approved 4 hours of General Continuing Ed, and 3 speakers are approved for Clinical CEUs:  Dr. Morton, Sheran Samuel-Benton, and Dr. Nemeth.  All CEUs will be offered  for a fee of $10.00 cash, payable at the door.  Any monies collected beyond reimbursement costs will be donated to Redemptorist Elementary School to help offset their expenses.  Teachers can get CEU certificates, but must get the conference approved for CEUs by their principals.  Since there is no cost for teacher CEUs, their attendance and certificates are offered for FREE! 

Lunch will be available for purchase for a fee of $7.00

The Greater Baton Rouge Learning Disabilities Coalition

The newly formed Greater Baton Rouge Learning Disabilities Coalition is made up of 7 Founding Board Members:  

Georgann Mire is an educational consultant in the Baton Rouge area.  She is also on the Board of Directors for the Louisiana Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (LaBIDA), and works in the Office of Disability Services at Baton Rouge Community College.  She is the Professional Development Coordinator for St. Elizabeth Foundation.  She is the mother of an adult with learning disabilities and the Aunt of Christopher Wayne Austin, deceased, who had dyslexia.

Tracey Lyons Tozier, MSS, is a clinical social worker by training.  She moved to Baton Rouge in 2011, and has been involved with the schools of her children, both of whom have learning disabilities.  She has also volunteered with the Albemarle Spouses Association, the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, Families Helping Families, and is the President of the Board for the Greater Baton Rouge Learning Disabilities Coalition.
