6 Weeks to a Healthier You with Joe Piscatella is back in 2014
Have you been looking for an opportunity to jump start a healthier lifestyle for you and your family? Or have you been told recently that you're pre-diabetic or your cholesterol is high? Taking control of your health is up to you, but with 6 Weeks to a Healthier You, you won't be taking on this challenge alone. Join us in this fun and inspiring program!
Our goal is to improve the health and well-being of the community. There are multiple components in this program, including six sessions with Joe Piscatella and two rounds of biometric health screenings. The cost of the program is $49 per person, however, groups of 10 or more qualify for discounted rates (contact Verdant for details). Scholarships are available to those who qualify (download the PDF application in English or Spanish). Free on-site childcare will be provided. The six sessions focus on specific topics presented by Joe Piscatella:
- Make Your Health Last as Long as Your Life on April 15 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center
- Eating Healthy in a Doubleburger.com World on April 22 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center
- Move It or Lose It on April 29 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center
- Take A Load Off Your Heart on May 6 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center
- Raising Fit Kids in a Fast World on May 13 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center
- Healthy Cooking at Home on May 20 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center
On some of these evenings, Joe will be joined by local experts in the field. These 90-minute presentations will include facts to get you thinking differently about your health and practical tips to apply to your daily life. Joe offers up a weekly challenge as well, as a means to get you acting upon what you've learned. Joe incorporates fun, humorous stories and personal experiences that are relatable and impactful, setting this program apart from many other wellness programs you may have encountered.
The following video was taken from a previous 6 Weeks to a Healthier Program and represents Joe's content and style.
Pre- and Post-Program Biometric Health Screenings
The biometric health screenings are conducted twice during the program at Swedish/Edmonds and you must sign up for an appointment time in advance. The pre-program screenings will take place during the mornings April 3-5 and the post-program screenings will take place May 15-17.
These tests include a blood draw to calculate your total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose. This portion is a fasting test, so participants should come on an empty stomach (water is OK). A nurse will also check your blood pressure and measure your height and weight for Body Mass Index. These biometrics are taken twice during the program to show you what progress is being made. While six weeks may seem like a short period of time, if you are developing new healthy habits, your biometrics can reflect the improvements.
These tests are included as part of the program fee but are optional and require a separate registration due to the large number of participants. Once you have completed registration for the program using this current website, you will be directed to a new website to sign up for the biometric health screenings.
In 2012, the Verdant Health Commission and its partners offered 6 Weeks to a Healthier You with Joe Piscatella for the first time. While Joe has offered successful programs in other communities around the U.S., this was the first time it took shape in South Snohomish County. Since then, more than 800 people have participated, and the health improvements made have been impressive.
In fall 2013, Verdant invited all past participants to attend a reunion session with Joe Piscatella and offered biometric screenings once again. Aggregate results showed improvements across the board, especially in the group who had completed the program 18 months earlier. In this group, triglycerides dropped 15 points on average and total cholesterol decreased 11 points on average, showing that people were able to sustain and improve their health.
Read on for quotes from reunion participants about their results:
"I lost 25 pounds, cut my triglycerides in half and lowered my cholesterol 90 points. This class was instrumental in beginning to take time for and better care of myself."
-- Janice, 2013 Participant
"While my blood pressure reading is only a few points lower, what isn't reflected is that as of a few months ago, I am now off 2 blood pressure meds, so being lower without the meds is HUGE for me. Looking forward to adding more exercise and getting off my cholesterol meds next. End result, getting healthier and saving money on the meds too!"
-- Anonymous, 2013 Participant
In an effort to keep participants motivated and on track, Verdant will host a reunion program and biometric health screenings for all participants during the fall/winter of 2014. This reunion is part of the complete program and will not have an additional fee, however, the dates and times have yet to be determined. This information will be finalized during the course of the 6 Weeks to a Healthier You program and shared at that time.
