Dog Walk SD Botanic Gardens

Pick 'em up and put 'em down at the first-ever "5K Paw Walk in the Garden"

Think about it. You've never seen a dog at San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. Just so we're all on the same page here... we're talking about the former Quail Botanical Gardens....just 3/4 of a mile up the street from your Rancho Coastal Humane Society.

That's about to change!

Your Rancho Coastal Humane Society and the San Diego Botanic Garden are inviting you...with our without your pooch...to be there when dogs are allowed to walk through the Garden for the first and only time in history, but chances are this is could be an annual event!

The first-ever "5K Paw Walk in the Garden" will take place on Saturday morning, February 23, 2013. Our good friends at San Diego Botanic Garden are hosting the event with your Rancho Coastal Humane Society. Both organizations will be benefiting from this event.

Heather Main, the Marketing and PR Manager for the Garden, reminds us that it's not just about the plants. It's about people, too. "Our mission is to inspire people of all ages to connect with plants and nature. We hope that allowing families to walk their dogs through the Garden for the 5K will remind them what a valuable resource they have and also encourage them to bring friends who have never visited the Garden before."

RCHS Community Liaison Nick Winfrey says, "This is going to be so much fun! Imagine all the friends of San Diego Botanic Garden joining paws with supporters of RCHS for this one-day event. And we're hoping to meet people who have never been involved with either organization. There will be pet products, food (for people), treats (for dogs), lots of great information for dog lovers, and (of course) dogs!"

Rules and Restrictions:

  • Please only bring dogs that are well-behaved around other dogs and people.
  • Dogs must be kept on leash at all times.
  • Leashes should be no longer than 6 feet; please keep it short at the start to avoid entanglement.
  • No retractable leashes, which may be hazardous in a crowd.
  • No dogs in heat.
  • Please clean up after your dog.
  • Limit two dogs per person.
  • Dogs must be up to date on all vaccines

We strongly suggest that both the owner and dog train for this event if you don’t already walk distances. Walkers, start conditioning yourselves and your dog for at least a few weeks leading up to the race. You should inspect your dog’s pads for signs of injury (cuts and wear) and be careful in warmer weather (carry water, keep runs short, watch your dog for signs of stress). Talk to your veterinarian if you have any concerns.  We recommend walk on trails or other locations where people walk with their dogs, to acclimate your dog to running in a pack with distractions.

This event is rain or shine. All participants will not be issued refunds for no shows or inclement weather. By registering for this event you are acknowledging that you have read the rules and regulations for the First Annual 5K Paw Walk in the Gardens.

San Diego Botanic Garden, a place of year-round beauty.

Explore four miles of garden trails, enjoy restful vistas, flowering trees, majestic palms, and the nation’s largest bamboo collection. Thanks to our mild climate, plants from all over the world thrive here. Our diverse topography provides a variety of microclimates giving the visitor a sensation of going from a desert environment to a tropical rainforest, all within 37 acres.

Located 30 minutes north of San Diego in Encinitas, California, San Diego Botanic Garden features numerous exhibits, including rare bamboo groves, desert gardens, a tropical rainforest, California native plants, Mediterranean climate landscapes, succulent gardens, an herb garden, firesafe landscaping, a subtropical fruit garden, and native coastal sage natural areas. In June of 2009, we opened the Hamilton Children's Garden, the largest interactive children's garden on the West Coast.

Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) was formed in 1960 by a group of hardworking volunteers, led by animal lover Maria K. Lloyd. The goal was and continues to be to care for the homeless animal population of San Diego County and to educate the public about pet over-population and responsible companion animal care.

In the nearly 50 years since our inception, RCHS has grown from a small facility run by volunteers to a professionally managed humane society that provides quality shelter care, adoption services, education programs and an animal safehouse program for the survivors of domestic violence.

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society is a non-profit, 501(c)3, charitable organization. We are a private animal shelter solely funded by donations from supporters and grants.
