What is the Shield Benefit?
Over thirty hand-made, wooden shields have been provided to selected artists within the greater Portland area and were decorated through a variety of artistic mediums.
Interwoven throughout the Waldorf curriculum are stories and festivals around legends, historical figures and their shields. One example of a Waldorf festival in which shields are present, is the Michaelmas Festival, held at the end of September each year.
In the Celtic tradition, St. Michael represents the unconquered hero, fighting with his sword and protecting with his shield against the powers of darkness. The Michaelmas Festival presents this story to represent the transition from summer to fall. The experience of nature during autumn, is that of a “passing away”, illuminated by brilliant color, which is a key component of the Michaelmas Festival. In celebrating Michaelmas, we strive to stimulate the children’s will to do good; for not even the smallest good deed is ever lost.
