March 26, 2012, Napa, CA -- The Napa Valley Education Foundation is pleased to announce the 4th Annual Napa Valley BBQ & Beer Battle taking place the afternoon of Sunday, June 30, 2013, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa, located at 3425 Solano Avenue in Napa, CA. Hosted by the Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa, the barbecue throwdown will benefit the NVEF’s Music Connection Program. The Music Connection has been supporting students of the Napa Valley Unified School District with musical instruments and opportunities for over a decade.
Guests attending the Napa Valley BBQ & Beer Battle will be spoiled with amazing BBQ, craft beer from top area breweries and live music throughout featuring Napa Valley Education Foundation Teacher of the Year, Alan U’Ren. This year the Barbecue Battle will feature a BBQ throwdown between two highly regarded barbeque enthusiasts: Three-time defending Champion Pat Burke and Challenger Stephen Barber of Farmstead.
Chef Stephen Barber of Farmstead Restaurant was most recently chef of Fish Story restaurant in Napa, which is owned by Chef Bradley Ogden's Lark Creek Restaurant Group. Previously, he was executive chef of MECCA in San Francisco where he received three stars from Michael Bauer of the San Francisco Chronicle and was named a 2004 “Rising Star Chef.” In 2007, Stephen opened BarbersQ in Napa, which also received three stars from the San Francisco Chronicle, was featured on the “Top 10 Best New Restaurants 2007” and “Top 100 Restaurants” lists by Mr. Bauer, and was named a Michelin Guide “Bib Gourmand.”
Pat Burke recently retired as Hospitality Director at Judd’s Hill Winery and is a recognized award winning barbeque competitor, a member of the famous “Barnyard Roasters” BBQ Team, and team captain of “The Vineyard Roasters”, who took 1st Prize in the Rib category at the 2006 West Coast BBQ Championships. Pat Burke is the three-time defending champion of this event.
The host and emcee of the event is Brian Whitmer, Executive Chef of VINeleven Restaurant & Bar located at the Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa. Brian has an impressive culinary background that started in Kansas City and found him developing his trademark skills and techniques in a wide variety of kitchens, from New York City to Carmel, CA. Chef Whitmer showcases his Kansas City roots with the culinary finesse and expertise that has won him national accolades.
The craft beer component pits top Bay Area breweries facing off to see which beer pairs best with the BBQ offerings. Guests will vote for their favorites and BBQ and Beer Battle trophies will be presented to the top three. Judd’s Hill winery, a partner since year one, will be the featured winery, offering tastes of their delicious wines throughout the event.
The BBQ and Beer Battle features a Silent Auction to benefit the Music Connection with packages featuring hotel stays, spa indulgences, Napa Valley adventure packages, fabulous meals, wine lots, and winery tours and tastings. In addition, a live auction item featuring an opportunity for guests to enjoy a private party for 12 with the BBQ chefs and host personally preparing a BBQ meal beautifully paired with Judd’s Hill wines will be presented for bid.
