Kalani Workshop Descriptions:

Monday, 12/2: Zoe Jakes: 9am-Noon & 2-5pm

OLD SCHOOL, Jamila Format Stylization, Combos and Finger Cymbal Drills-

All Zoe’s workshops begin with belly dance flow drills to train the dancer and prepare for the day.
Flow Drills: The trifecta of a strong dancer is Technique, Strength, and Flexibility. Expect new and creative drills that you can take home for your own personal practice. All aspects of movement will be touched on from the inside out, from head to hips, encouraging use of breath, energy, and connection. My wish is to impart a solid foundation of dance movement with high impact and high-energy drills to develop strong, versatile dancers that can intelligently handle any belly dance style. Incorporating syncopation and isolations of the body.
In this workshop we will cover brand new combinations inspired by the vintage belly dance of the west coast tribal dance lineage, the belly dance mommas Jamila Salimpour and Katarina Burda. The stylization is all Earthy Glamour, our feet rooted firmly to the floor while executing more modern pops and locks, mixing Juicy 70's influenced old school with cutting edge Tribal Fusion vocabulary. We will be immersing ourselves into the world of 1970's belly dance, so bring your favorite hip scarf and lets all wear our favorite vintage jewelry!
This workshop is finger cymbal intensive. To prepare it is recommended you get the playing finger cymbals with Jamila CD. and practice before hand.  http://www.suhailastore.com/product_details.php?category_id=77&item_id=83

Tuesday, 12/3: Kami Liddle: 9am-Noon

Refine your Technique by Getting Back to the Core-

This workshop's focus is not only to fine-tune your technique, but also to refine your movements by connecting to the deep internal muscles in your core.  The core is our center and when we move our core, we can move with ease, grace, strength and balance.  We will begin with floor exercises to strengthen and activate the core and move onto drilling isolations and advanced combinations that are sure to not only challenge you, but also leave you feeling total body connectivity.

Tuesday, 12/3: Kami Liddle: 2-5pm

Choreography Toolbox: Tools to Aid you in the Creative Process-

If you ever get that feeling of being stuck while trying to create new combinations or choreography… this class is for you.  Several methods will be introduced and explored to inspire one’s ability to create new movement. The goal is to help each dancer find new modalities and pathways of making movement and creating choreography.  This is a two-part class and each student will be given an assignment to work on over the course of the intensive and will use Thursday's class to present their work.  Each student is asked to bring a piece of music they wish to focus on and a way in which they can work on their piece (via iPod, computer, walkman, etc).

Wednesday, 12/4: Kami Liddle:  9am-Noon

Fluidity in Motion-

The focus in this class is deepening one's connection to the floor and ability to move outside of their personal space.  This workshop will focus on not only on foot patterns but will cover how to gain balance and grace while traveling across the floor.   We will begin with a modern and ballet influenced warm-up to focus on proper alignment and move on to traveling foot patterns across the floor.  Several complex foot patterns will be drilled and eventually building on top of them adding isolations and arm work.

Wednesday, 12/4: Zoe jakes: 7:30-9:30pm

Steady goes it! Balancing Props with Poise-
Bring whatever balancing prop strikes your fancy, sword, pot, tray, or any other unusual thing you like.  Stability and working from the core will be focused on in this workshop, as well as proper posture. Learn how to gracefully come to the floor, floor work, and more challenging concepts such as fast level changes and spinning.  Integrate the prop into your dance so it becomes part of the performance, and not just a gag.  Also, what the heck do you do with the darn thing before you put it on your head?  We’ll work on that, too!

Thursday, 12/5: Zoe Jakes: 9am-Noon

The Lion and the Lady-
The duality living in all of us, the fierce and the feminine, come out at different times in our lives. As a performer it is important to access both of these aspects to find balance in our movement choices. We will be studying the aspects of dance and the movements that represent the extremes of bold, expansive in your face; and soft, subtle fluidity, as well using group exercises to create an authentic connection to both expressions of movement.  We are unleashing our inner lion, and giving our inner lady permission to strut!

Thursday, 12/5: Kami Liddle: 7:30-9:30pm

Choreography Toolbox Part Two-

This workshop is a continuation of our focus from Tuesday's class. Each student will have the chance to demonstrate their work on their assigned project.  Topics such as how to build upon these works in progress and how to find your own voice within the dance will be explored.

Saturday, 12/7: Kami Liddle: 9am-Noon

Delicate Intricacies Choreography-

This choreography is a brand-new piece focusing on a more visceral level of dancing.  Kami will share her inspiration and creative process of making this dance while breaking down each movement phrase filled with footwork, turns, layers and complex arm and hand movements.  This dance is designed to inspire and challenge dancers of all levels with simple and complex variations offered.

Saturday, 12/7: Zoe Jakes: 2-5pm

ZOE JAKES SHIMMY-A-THON-
YOU think it's not possible to shimmy for almost an entire class? Think again! Zoe is a huge advocate for muscle memory so in this workshop you will be werkin' your ABs, GLUTES, QUADS, OBLIQUES, and doing it over and over again!! Layers will of course be introduced, as well as short combos to challenge all levels, traveling shimmies and stationary shimmies, 4/4, 3/4, all that good stuff we belly dancers love. And to finish we will learn a short shimmy choreography!

Sunday, 12/8: Zoe Jakes 9am-Noon

East meets East-
A belly dance choreography inspired by Balinese and Indian movement.
The ancient and possibly oldest book ever written about dance, the Natya Shastra, created a format that many different classical dance forms followed, from Cambodia to India to Bali. This choreography is inspired by the aesthetic of these classical dance styles, and will be exploring unique arm patterns, eye movements, footwork, and symbolism unique to eastern classical dance, and then weaving this in with tribal fusion styled movements.

Sunday, 12/8: Kami Liddle: 2-5pm

Gooey Pop and Lock Drills and Combinations-

This technique and drilling intense class will focus movement phrases that combine smooth effortless looking pathways contrasted with surprising and unexpected pops and locks.  After this high-energy class, students will walk away with several versatile combinations that work great for dancing to electronic music or drum solos.

About the Instructors:

Kami Liddle:

Kami has studied various dance styles throughout her life, but found her true passion, Belly Dance, when she was 18 years old. She began to study cabaret style belly dance until she found Fat Chance Belly Dance and began to study their videos religiously. Today Kami refers to her style as a modern fusion of an ancient dance. Kami has earned a degree in Art with a Minor in Dance from the University of Nevada, Reno and has been nominated for 'Best Interpretive Artist" for 2005 and 2007 by Zaghareet Magazine. She joined Bellydance Superstars in 2005 and is a contributing choreographer as well as the director of the Tribal Superstars. Kami recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area.
