The Shannon Smith McCants

Memorial Scholarship

The Shannon Smith McCants Memorial Scholarship was established by the Jacksonville Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.’’’ to assist deserving local Jacksonville graduating seniors who are pursuing a degree in pharmacy at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University.  A mother of two children (Derrick II and Sandra), wife to Derrick, and pharmacy manager, Shannon joined the Jacksonville Chapter of Jack & Jill of America as a Legacy member of the Mobile, Alabama chapter on March 14, 2004 and served as an active and committed leader of the organization.

Shannon Smith McCants graduated from Florida A & M with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1991.  She was a devoted wife, loving mother and servant leader who died making a difference in her community and in her beloved profession of pharmacy.  Shannon was the Chief Pharmacist of the Ambulatory Pharmacy at Shands Jacksonville Hospital, when she was shot and killed on November 20, 2006 by a patient while she assisted them at the pharmacy.

Founded 75 years ago in Philadelphia, PA,  Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is an international not for profit organization with 220 chapters and over 30,000 family members. Today our members live the legacy established in 1938 to enrich the lives of all children, but particularly those of African-American descent, through educational, cultural, civic, recreational, financial literacy and leadership development. The Jack and Jill Foundation was established in 1968 as the philanthropic arm of the National organization to ensure that youth in at-risk communities have access to healthy lifestyle, higher education and the ability to learn how to continue the cycle of giving.
