Thomas Jefferson and the iPad

Middleton Magnet High School, a Pre-Collegiate Academy for STEM , would like to invite you to our 3rd annual “STEM Professional Association Event” from 5:30-7:30 PM on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013. This free event is held on an annual basis to connect Tampa Bay area students, parents, educators and professionals in order to promote student interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professions. Participating associations for this years event are:

  • Society for Manufacturing Engineers (SME)
  • Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA)

Our speaker is Mr. Tom Borkes of The Jefferson Project, an organization dedicated to electronic manufacturing excellence through concurrent education. He will be speaking on the topic of "Thomas Jefferson and the iPad:  Lessons in Competing in High Tech Electronic Product Manufacturing from the Grave". This presentation makes the case that:

  • Automation is the counterweight to low wage manufacturing
  • The key to successful automation is the availability of a world class manufacturing workforce and products that are designed for automation
  • To develop and maintain a world class manufacturing and product design workforce, the growing gap between academic preparation and industry need must be closed

Video and a discussion of the robotic automation that is used in electronic circuit board assembly will be used to develop strategies that address this thesis. Those attending will be challenged with some experiments and thought problems during the course of the presentation.

A robotics demonstration will be conducted by Middleton High School students, winners of the 2012 World FTC Robotics Championship and 2013 Florida State FTC Robotics Championship as they prepare for the April 25-27, 2013 – FIRST World Championships in St. Louis, MO!
