Prescription drug abuse is the nation's fastest-growing drug problem, according to the White House Office on National Drug Policy. Keynote, Christopher M. Jones, PharmD., MPH, LCDR, US Public Health Service, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will discuss why the CDC has classified the misuse of these powerful painkillers as an epidemic and what Indiana can do about it.

Over the lunch hour, guest speaker Paul Winchester MD will share new research relating to neonatal abstinence syndrome from the perspective of his practice as a Neonatologist caring for babies at Riley Hospital and at St. Francis. Indiana has experienced a 4700% increase in the incidence of Neonatal abstinence due to higher rates of maternal prescription opiate abuse. This area of focus is critical for developing recommendations for pre and peri-natal substance abuse prevention and treatment services.

Subject matter experts will address initiatives that are being pursued by the Indiana Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force in five major areas to reduce prescription drug misuse and abuse including: education, enforcement, take-back (disposal), INSPECT (prescription drug monitoring program), and treatment. Breakout sessions will facilitate discussions of possible legal and policy approaches to help reduce the abuse of prescription drugs thereby decreasing the number of people addicted to and deaths associated with these drugs in our state.
